Parker, 5K crew impressive in NorCal

STANFORD/SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Two-time All-American Cody Parker made a solid return to national contention and the Seawolves' 5,000-meter crew posted an impressive performance Friday to lead the Alaska Anchorage track & field team's efforts at the Stanford Invitational and San Francisco Distance Carnival.

Parker was one of six Seawolves to break into the NCAA Div. II provisional rankings, unleashing a javelin throw of exactly 212 feet at Stanford. Friday's competition marked the first successful throws for Parker – the 2013 NCAA D-II javelin champion – since undergoing shoulder surgery and taking an injury redshirt season last spring. His mark ranks as the top provisional throw in D-II currently and fourth overall. One of the athletes ahead of him is senior teammate Franz Burghagen, who threw 218-3 on Friday at Stanford, although he has already qualified with an automatic distance of 224-10.

The men's 5K duo of junior Dominik Notz and freshman Henry Cheseto was equally as impressive at S.F. State, cranking out top-3 national provisional times of 14:07.05 and 14:08.86, respectively. Notz's time was good for second place in the field of 172 runners and ranks as the best in NCAA Div. II so far this season, while Cheseto's time ranks third. They were joined in the provisional rankings by senior Dylan Anthony with his time of 14:26.84.

In the women's 5,000 meters in San Francisco, senior Amy Johnston improved her provisional time by 21 seconds with an impressive personal-best of 16:52.50. The Northern California native's new time now sits third nationally.

Meanwhile, Seawolf junior Jessica Pahkala broke her outdoor personal-best by nearly two seconds and also moved up to third in the nation with a time of 2:10.59 in the 800 meters. The Wasilla High School product edged Seattle Pacific's Lynelle Decker (2:10.64) to win the race and was joined in the provisional rankings by freshman teammate Tamara Perez, who got in just under the standard with time of 2:13.31.

The women's 3,000-meter steeplechase at S.F. State saw junior Beatrice Decker post another improved NCAA provisional time. The German moved up two spots in the national rankings to 13th with finish of 11:06.96.

Joining Parker and Perez with brand-new provisional performances at S.F. State were junior Victor Samoei and freshman Edwin Kangogo in the 10,000 meters, plus junior Jesse Miller in the 800 meters.

Samoei raced to a personal-best 30:28.53 and Kangogo finished in 30:31.17 to slip into the current national standings at ninth and 10th, respectively. Miller earned the first NCAA provisional time of his career in 1:52.20 as the Juneau native won his heat and placed fourth overall.

“That was a very good day overall,” said UAA head coach Michael Friess. “It was great to see Cody prove that he's healthy and back in the hunt, and all of our 5,000-meter runners made big strides in qualifying for NCAAs. Jessica Pahkala's time in the 800 was very impressive as well.”

The Seawolves complete their road trip Saturday with more athletes at San Francisco State.
