Silverswords down #12 Seawolves in Honolulu

HONOLULU – Senior guard Suki Wiggs scored 33 points but the 12th-ranked Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not complete a second-half comeback Friday in a 92-81 loss to Chaminade at Moanalua High School.

The Seawolves (2-1) also got 14 points and six rebounds from senior center Connor Devine and 11 points apiece from seniors Spencer Svejcar and Corey Hammell in the battle between the longtime NCAA Div. II rivals.

The Silverswords (1-0) were led by 26 points from Rohndell Goodwin, while Kiran Shastri and Dantley Walker tallied 19 points apiece. The Pac West Conference club shot 54 percent (32 of 59), knocking down 13 of 27 three-pointers.

UAA outrebounded the Hawaiians 40-26 and shot 28 of 38 at the free throw line, but made just 7 of 21 from long range.

Wiggs, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year, shot 4 of 8 on three-pointers and 17 of 19 from the charity stripe, tying his own program record for free throws made in a game. It also marked the seventh 30-plus scoring effort for Wiggs, tying him for the fourth-most such performances in Seawolf history.

UAA trailed 42-32 late in the first half before rallying to tie it 48-48 two minutes into the second half. Chaminade's Sam Daly answered with two free throws and Shastri hit a trey to spark a 7-0 run for the Silverswords, though, and UAA never got closer than four points again.

UAA completes its quick trip to Oahu on Saturday when it faces Hawaii Pacific on the same court at 8:30 p.m. AST.
