BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves furnished their second straight tie, matching host Bowling Green, 3-3 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game Friday at the BGSU Ice Arena. The Falcons collected two WCHA points with the 3-on-3 overtime goal, while the Seawolves picked up one.
Both teams scored on their first shots of the night, setting up a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes of play. The Seawolves (1-10-2) – who improve to 0-5-2 in league play – then went on to take the lead in the second before BGSU (6-7-2, 5-3-1 WCHA) responded 18 seconds later before going up by one late in the second. Junior captain Matt Anholt registered the game-tying goal, just 10 seconds into the third, eventually forcing extra minutes.
The night started 46 seconds into the opening stanza with an unassisted tally by senior Kevin Dufour on a breakaway from center ice. UAA would respond at 6:31 with sophomore Alex Jackstadt's first of the season, capitalizing on his own rebound in front of netminder Chris Nell. Sophomore Cam Amantea and junior Tanner Johnson gained their first assists on the year.
After the 15-minute intermission, UAA gots another first on the season, when sophomore Nicolas Erb-Ekholm recorded his at 6:48. Additionally, sophomore Nathan Renouf picked up a helper, giving himself a three-game point streak (0-3—3) after returning from an injury. Junior Jarrett Brown also assisted on the play.
The Seawolves' lead lasted for 18 seconds until Brett D'Andrea knotted the game once again at 7:06 with a tip down low. The Falcons took the lead with the lone power-play goal of the evening, a shot from the point with just 1:16 to play in the second. BGSU went 1-for-6 on the man advantage, while the Seawolves were scoreless on five attempts.
Meanwhile, Anholt earned his third of the season and team-high seventh point with the game-tying strike right off the faceoff.
Neither team was able to score in the 5-on-5 overtime, sending the game to a 5-minute, 3-on-3 overtime. Giving BGSU the extra WCHA point was Mitch McLain, who scored with 1:17 expired on the clock.
UAA placed 22 shots on Nell (6-5-2), while the Seawolves' Olivier Mantha (1-8-2) made 18 saves on 31 shots.
With the second straight tie – UAA tied Michigan Tech on Nov. 19 – the Seawolves are currently last in the WCHA standings with three points, one point below Northern Michigan.
The teams return to the ice tomorrow at 3:07 p.m. AST.
