Mitchell sparks Seawolves to rout of Falcons

ANCHORAGE – Senior guard Diante Mitchell scored 25 points on red-hot shooting and forward Corey Hammell delivered a double-double Thursday to lift Alaska Anchorage to an 85-49 rout of Seattle Pacific in Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball action at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (8-3, 2-1 GNAC) got 14 points and 14 rebounds from Hammell, plus 14 points, five assists and no turnovers from senior guard Suki Wiggs to claim their largest margin of victory in 72 all-time meetings against SPU.

The Falcons (5-6, 1-2) were led by 12 points from reserve wing Hunter Eisenhower, who shot 4 of 5, but the rest of the visitors connected on just 13 of 50 overall and 2 of 22 from long range. The loss was SPU's most lopsided since a 130-91 defeat at Montana State Billings on Feb. 14, 1998.

Coming off a 10-day break, UAA scored the game's first five points and led 13-2 when Mitchell chased down a loose ball and converted an easy layup at the 14:58 mark. The lead continued to expand throughout the half, and Spencer Svejcar capped a 14-0 run to on another fast-break, making it 39-10 with 4:48 on the first-half clock.

UAA led 46-19 at halftime and never let the advantage dip lower in the second 20 minutes as Svejcar finished with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting and a career-high seven assists.

Wiggs shot just 6 of 17 from the floor but the rest of the Seawolves combined for 26-of-44 (.591) marksmanship, headlined by Mitchell's big night. The 6-1 point guard shot 8 of 10 overall and 7 of 9 on three-pointers, to go with four assists, five rebounds, two steals and no turnovers in 33 minutes.

UAA committed only six turnovers on the night, while dishing 24 assists. Senior center Connor Devine added 10 points and three blocks, and the Seawolf bench combined 12 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

Meanwhile, Hammell – who came into the game second nationally with 5.5 offensive rebounds per game – grabbed seven offensive boards and converted all six of his free throws. The senior from Santa Rosa, Calif., earned his fourth double-double of the season and 18th in 43 career games at UAA.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 5 p.m. for another GNAC game when they face Saint Martin's. Call 907-786-1562 for tickets.
