Six 'Wolves nab All-GNAC awards, Mullings POY

PORTLAND, Ore. – After helping the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to its second straight regular-season title, senior Megan Mullings has been voted the 2015-16 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Mullings was joined as a unanimous First Team All-GNAC pick by senior teammate Jenna Buchanan, leading a pack of six Seawolves among the league's postseason honorees. Junior Kiki Robertson was chosen Second Team All-GNAC, senior Keiahnna Engel claimed the league's Newcomer of the Year award, while Alysha Devine and Jessica Madison each received All-GNAC Honorable Mention nods in voting by the league's 11 head coaches.

Mullings, a 6-foot forward/center, leads the Seawolves (31-2, 18-2 GNAC) with 16.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks, along with 1.7 steals per game. The Glendale, Ariz. (Cactus HS/S. Mountain CC) native leads the GNAC and ranks third in NCAA Div. II with a .629 field-goal percentage, on pace to break her own single-season school record, while her .618 career percentage is on pace to break the GNAC record and stands third among active D-II players.

Starting early with career-highs of 35 points and 13 rebounds in a Nov. 1 win over fellow playoff contender Academy of Art, Mullings has scored double figures in 28 of the last 30 games, including eight 20-plus efforts. She also has 14 games with multiple blocks and 15 games with multiple steals, doing her damage in a modest 22.1 minutes per game.

Mullings becomes the third Seawolf to earn GNAC Player of the Year since the league's founding in 2001-02, along with Hanna Johansson in 2011-12 and three-time winner Rebecca Kielpinski (2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09).

Meanwhile, Buchanan ranks ninth in the GNAC with 12.9 points per game, along with 3.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 steals per contest. The 5-8 guard from Galena, Alaska, ranks in the top 20 nationally in both three-point percentage (.445) and three-pointers per game (3.0), while breaking the 25-year-old NCAA Div. II single-season record with at least one trey in all 33 games so far.

With 23 double-digit efforts through the regular season, Buchanan has risen to ninth place on UAA's career scoring list (1,214 points), along with school records for three-pointers in a career (229) and season (98). On the GNAC's all-time lists, she ranks fifth in both three-point percentage (.417—third among active D-II players) and treys made.

A 5-5 point guard, Robertson takes home her third straight 2nd Team All-GNAC honor, helping UAA lead the nation in both assists (20.8) and steals (14.2) per game. In the D-II national stats, the Honolulu native ranks fourth with a 3-to-1 assist-turnover ratio and 17th in assists per game (5.5), while her 2.2 steals per game rank second in the GNAC. With 498 assists, Robertson has already set UAA's career record in less than three years, and she can move up to No. 2 on the all-time GNAC list with just three more dishes.

Madison earned an honorable mention award as the Seawolves' third-leading scorer (10.1 ppg), while producing 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game. The senior from Port Angeles, Wash., ranks seventh in the league with 1.7 three-pointers per game, and she trails only Buchanan on UAA's all-time treys list, currently with 198.

All five UAA starters earned recognition as Devine also got an honorable mention nod, thanks to a strong finish. The junior from Wasilla is averaging 8.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game on the season, however she boosted her scoring to 10.0 ppg in league affairs, shooting .496 from the field and .452 from long range.

Despite coming off the bench in 23 of her 28 appearances, Engel continued UAA's tradition of producing GNAC Newcomers of the Year, becoming the eighth Seawolf to claim that award since 2002-03. A senior transfer from Boise State, the 5-8 guard is UAA's fourth-leading scorer (9.3 ppg) and rebounder (3.8 rpg), despite playing only 18.4 minutes per game. A former 4A Alaska Player of the Year at Anchorage's Dimond High School, Engel ranks ninth in the GNAC with 1.7 steals per game, while shooting .480 from the field and .404 from long range.

This week the Seawolves travel to Lacey, Wash., where they will open their GNAC Tournament title defense on Friday, Mar. 4 (6:30 p.m. AST) against either No. 4 seed Simon Fraser or No. 5 seed Central Washington in the semifinal round.
