FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves' season came to an end Saturday following a 3-2 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win by in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks in Game 4 of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup at the Carlson Center.
With the loss, the Seawolves were eliminated from post-season play as the Nanooks (10-20-4, 8-16-4 WCHA) collected the final playoff seed at No. 8. UAF will head to the No.1 seed, Michigan Tech, next weekend for a best-of-three WCHA First Round series.
UAA battled back twice to tie the game, but were unable to lead in 60 minutes of play. Meanwhile, the Nanooks received two goal by senior captain Tyler Morley, who returned to play this weekend after missing six games with an injury.
UAA's wingers on the fourth line were the Seawolves' most productive line of the evening as Anchorage locals junior Connor Wright and freshman Alex Jackstadt each furnished goals. Wright's fourth of the season came on his third shot of the night, hitting a UAF player's skate at 1:17 of the second, unassisted. Jackstads third of the season at 2:40 of the third with assists to seniors Blake Leask and Blake Tatchell.
Despite the score, sophomore Olivier Mantha was solid in net, stopping multiple Grade A scoring chances for the Nanooks. Mantha made 27 saves in the loss for a 10-18-3 record this season.
Junior Dylan Hubbs was injured early in the third and didn't return to the game.
The Nanooks captured their seventh straight Cup title with a 4-0-1 record against the Seawolves this season. Tonight's contest was the ninth straight one-goal game between the heated Alaska schools.
The Seawolves – who end their season with a 11-20-3 overall record and a 8-18-2 league slate – say goodbye to seniors Leask, Austin Sevalrud, Tatchell and Chris Williams.
