Hockey falls in overtime

ORONO, MAINE – Eduards Tralmaks scored 3:13 into overtime to give Maine a 2-1 win over Alaska Anchorage Saturday.

"Tonight was a great response after a tough loss last night," said head coach Matt Curley. "I was proud of the effort put forth by our guys and felt we took a big step tonight. These are experiences we need to have to continue our growth as a team and will serve us well as we move into league play.

After a scoreless first period, the Black Bears opened the scoring at 12:11 of the second period after Samuel Rennaker fired a long wrist shot past Kris Carlson.

The Maine lead would only last for four minutes thanks to a power-play goal by Tomi Hiekkavirta. Nick Wicks won a faceoff and then Hiekkavirta fired a wrist shot past Maine goalie Jeremy Swayman.

In overtime, the Black Bears dumped the puck into the Seawolves zone, but an unlucky bounce off the boards sent the puck right in front of the UAA goal where Eduards Tralmak's shot was deflected off a UAA defender and into the goal.

UAA out-shot UM in every period and finished the game with a 38-28 edge. UAA's 38 shots are the most they have recorded in a game since Nov. 11, 2017 when they fired 38 against Alabama-Huntsville in a 3-3 tie.

Kris Carlson finished with 26 saves for the Green and Gold.

Anchorage was 1-for-8 on the man-advantage, and Maine finished 0-for-4.

Alaska Anchorage will have a weekend off before hosting Alaska Fairbanks in the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup Oct. 25 and 26.
