Goo, Yasin land spots on GNAC Preseason squad

PORTLAND, Ore. – On the opening day of their 2019-20 season, Alaska Anchorage seniors Yazmeen Goo and Safiyyah Yasin were honored Tuesday as members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team.

A point guard from Daly City, Calif., Goo made the preseason squad for the second year in a row as one of seven unanimous choices. Despite missing 10 games with an injury, she was named honorable mention All-GNAC for the second straight season in 2018-19, averaging 9.7 points, 3.2 rebounds and ranking ninth nationally with 3.0 steals per game.

Having helped UAA to three straight GNAC regular-season titles and two straight NCAA Sweet 16 berths, Goo enters her senior season ranked fifth in assists (326) and sixth in steals (209) on the Seawolves' career lists. She is also a two-time GNAC All-Academic selection.

A shooting guard from Oakland, Calif., Yasin was recognized on the preseason squad despite coming off the bench in all 33 games a year ago. The Diablo Valley College transfer averaged 8.4 points and was fifth in the league with 2.2 steals per game as a junior, scoring double digits on 11 occasions. Yasin racked up a season-high 20 points in a home win over Simon Fraser and had 11 points in UAA's 76-69 NCAA Tournament victory Hawaii Pacific.

The Seawolves are in North Carolina to begin the season with Tuesday's contest against NAIA foe St. Andrews, followed by a Sunday exhibition game at Div. I power Duke. UAA makes its home debut Nov. 9-10 at the Alaska Airlines Center against fellow NCAA Div. II West Region foes Chaminade and San Francisco State. Visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
