Silverswords hand Seawolves first loss in Challenge finale

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore guard Tobin Karlberg scored 14 points and grabbed three steals Sunday but it wasn't enough for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team, which suffered its first loss of the season, 85-56 to a hot-shooting Chaminade squad in the finale of the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (3-1) also got 10 points and seven rebounds from junior center Oggie Pantovic, who joined Karlberg on the all-tournament team.

Coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance last season, the Silverswords (2-0) were led by 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting and three assists from tourney Most Outstanding Player Tyler Cartaino. Starting guard Telly Davenport added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists for the visitors from Honolulu, while all-tourney pick Kendall Small delivered seven points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals.

"Chaminade followed their system and their game plan very well, and they were able to take us out of what we wanted to do early," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "I thought we played much better over the final 12 minutes, finding a group that worked well together and kept competing. I'm proud of the way our guys never quit playing hard, and we'll take tonight as a learning experience."

Senior wing Tyler Brimhall started the scoring with a three-pointer and senior forward Niko Bevens gave UAA a short-lived 8-7 advantage on a three-pointer at the 16:16 mark, but the Silverswords took over at the point with a 10-2 run.

The Seawolves kept their deficit in single digits for much of the first half before going through a 5-minute stretch without a field goal, and Chaminade pushed its lead to double digits for good when Arissol nailed a three-pointer to make it 28-16 with 6:32 on the clock.

Chaminade led 48-23 at halftime and did not allow UAA closer than a 19-point margin twice in the second half.

Karlberg shot 6 of 13 from the field as the former Grace Christian High School scored in double figures for the fourth time in as many games this year, while Pantovic led the Seawolves in rebounding for the second game in a row, along with a team season-high three blocks.

Jack Macdonald finished with seven points and a pair of steals, and fellow senior guard Tyrus Hosley collected seven points, six assists and no turnovers for UAA.

The Seawolves hit the road for the first time this season for two more NCAA Div. II West Region contests, facing San Francisco State on Friday (4:30 p.m. AST) and host Sonoma State on Saturday (6:30 p.m.) in the Ron Logsdon Classic in Rohnert Park, Calif.
