Seniors propel Seawolves to 81-69 win over Gators

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – Jack Macdonald scored 20 points and fellow senior guard Tyrus Hosley delivered 11 points and nine rebounds Friday to propel the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to an 81-69 victory over San Francisco State in the Ron Logsdon Classic at The Wolves' Den.

The Seawolves (4-1) also got 14 points from senior forward Niko Bevens as they committed just six turnovers and shot 48 percent from the field.

The Gators (2-1) were led by 16 points from starting forward Linton Acliese in the first meeting between the two NCAA Div. II West Region programs since 1994.

"I thought this was a great step forward for this group," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "We used last week to identify what would be best for this team and made some adjustments both offensively and defensively. I am proud of them for fighting through the first half when we missed quite a few shots."

After falling behind 5-0 at the outset, the Seawolves battled back with an 11-2 run and took a 32-27 lead into the locker room behind 11 first-half points from Macdonald.

San Francisco State scored the first five points of the second half to make it 32-32, but UAA answered with a three-pointer from Bevens and a layup by junior center David Riley to take the lead for good.

Oggie Pantovic converted a short jump shot and Macdonald followed with a three-pointer for a 51-40 edge at the 11:22 mark as the Seawolves began to pull away. Another Bevens trey pushed the advantage to double digits for the final 10:17, reaching as high as 81-63 on two DeAndre Osuigwe free throws with two minutes remaining.

"We did a much better job in our team defensive concepts, which kept us in the game until shots starting falling," Osborne added. "We also got contributions up and down the lineup, which we needed."

Macdonald had his best offensive game of the young season, shooting 4 of 7 from the field and swishing all 10 of his free throws. Meanwhile, Hosley shot 5 of 7 from the field and grabbed four of his team season-high nine rebounds on the offensive glass.

Bevens overcame a poor-shooting first half to score 10 points after the break, along with a team-high three assists. Riley collected four points and six rebounds, junior guard Amari Hale had seven points on 3-of-4 shooting, and junior center Oggie Pantovic produced six points and five rebounds.

The Seawolves return to the same court Saturday at 6:30 p.m. AST to face Classic host Sonoma State in another Div. II West Region non-conference contest.
