BOCA RATON, Fla. – Senior point guard
Yazmeen Goo scored 11 points but it wasn't enough for the 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to hold off a huge comeback by Lynn, falling 53-52 at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center on Wednesday.
The Seawolves (5-1) also got 10 points and three steals from senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin as they lost to a Div. II non-conference opponent for just the second time in the last 55 games.
The Fighting Knights (3-4) were led by 16 points and 10 rebounds from reserve forward Uloma Enyogasi, who sank a turnaround jumper with five seconds remaining for the game-winner.
"We were not focused and did not play with the right energy to win," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team came in averaging 91.0 points per game and with an average winning margin of 30 points. "Lynn was deserving of their victory and we need to regroup for two more games this weekend."
Despite shooting 1 of 15 from three-point range in the first half, the Seawolves took a 28-17 lead into the locker room after holding the Fighting Knights to one field goal in the second quarter.
UAA pushed its lead to 36-20 on a three-pointer by
Jahnna Hajdukovich, but Lynn would heat up at that point, going on a 22-7 run over the next six minutes. The Fighting Knights took a 44-43 lead on a jumper by Taylor Jones to start the fourth quarter before the Seawolves answered with a 7-1 surge, including a go-ahead layup by senior
Amelia Motz.
Yasin sank two free throws to give the visitors a 52-48 lead with 2:41 left, however the Seawolves could not convert again on the offensive end. UAA committed a shot clock violation with 11 seconds remaining, and Lynn forced the ball into Enyogasi in the paint. Double-teamed, the junior from Nigeria spun and swished a 12-foot jumper.
Following a timeout, UAA got the ball to Goo, but the 5th-year senior could not make a contested layup at the buzzer.
Junior center
Tennae Voliva finished with nine points and eight rebounds as the Seawolves shot season lows of 28 percent (19 of 68) from the field and 9 percent (2 of 22) from three-point range.
The Seawolves finish the program's farthest regular-season road trip in 17 years with two games at the Cesar Odio Classic in Miami Gardens, Fla., starting Friday at noon AST against host Barry.
