MIAMI SHORES, Fla. –
Yazmeen Goo scored 13 points and fellow senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin had 11 points and three assists Friday to help 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage rebound from its first loss with a 60-41 women's basketball victory over Barry at the Health & Sports Center.
The Seawolves (6-1) also got eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two blocks from junior center
Tennae Voliva as they claimed the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Buccaneers (1-3) were led by 16 points on 4-of-9 three-point shooting from starting guard Harriet Swindells, but the rest of her teammates combined to make just 10 of 47 shots from the floor.
"We showed flashes of the team we can be in the first half, but we've got to continue to execute for the full 40 minutes," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team suffered a 53-52 upset at Lynn at Wednesday. "Scoring 21 points in the second half is a good way to give up a lead like we did the other day. Luckily our defense was much better today, and we were able to get into their passing lanes and earn some transition points."
Playing their second of three games in four games, the Seawolves never trailed against the hosts from the Sunshine State Conference. Nursing a 7-6 lead midway through the first quarter, Voliva delivered a traditional three-point play, and UAA got consecutive three-pointers from Yasin, Goo and
Stephanie Jackson to spark a 17-0 run.
Kedranea' Addison pushed the largest advantage to 35-12 with a three-pointer, and Goo made a steal and layup to beat the buzzer for a 39-18 lead at halftime.
The Seawolves shot just 7 of 23 from the floor in the second half and finished with 21 turnovers, but the Buccaneers could get no closer than 45-31 late in the third quarter.
UAA won the rebounding battle 39-34 as Goo collected six, along with five apiece from
Kimani Fernandez,
Amelia Motz and
Sala Langi.
Goo shot 5 of 7 from the field, while adding two assists and two steals.
The Seawolves finish their farthest road trip in 18 years when they face Nova Southeastern on the same court, Saturday at noon AST. Check the GoSeawolves.com women's basketball schedule page for links to live stats and video.
