#10 Seawolves shred Sharks in Florida finale

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Sophomore guard Nicole Pinckney led a balanced scoring effort with 13 points and 10th-ranked Alaska Anchorage dominated defensively to post an 85-47 blowout of Nova Southeastern at Barry University's Health & Sports Center on Saturday.

The Seawolves (7-1) also got 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting from junior forward Sala Langi and 11 points, five steals, three assists and three steals from junior guard Stephanie Jackson as they led virtually wire to wire, collecting 24 steals on 34 NSU turnovers.

Playing 30 minutes from their own campus, the Sharks (2-4) were led by 12 points apiece from starting guards Iva Ilic and Claire McMahon in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

"That was the complete effort that we had been waiting for this week," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team finished a three-games-in-four-days string against Sunshine State Conference opponents. "Our intensity stayed consistent throughout the game and we got back to the offensive rhythm that we'd become accustomed to. It's extremely pleasing as a coaching staff to score 85 points with no one getting more than 13."

Tied 9-9 midway through the first quarter, Pinckney started a 6-0 run with a jump shot, and UAA built the lead to 24-15 at the first break. The advantage continued to grow in the second quarter as freshman Rachel Ingram capped a 9-2 run with a three-pointer for a 49-31 halftime edge.

Jackson nailed a pair of free throws with 7 minutes left in the third quarter for a 54-33 lead, and the Seawolves led by at least 20 the rest of the way.

Pinckney shot 5 of 10 from the field and 3 of 8 from long range, while the former Chugiak High School star was one of eight Seawolves with multiple steals. A transfer from Santa Fe (Fla.) College, Jackson scored her season high on 4-of-7 shooting as all 12 Seawolves got into the scoring column.

Junior center Tennae Voliva had eight points and nine rebounds, and senior guards Yazmeen Goo and Safiyyah Yasin delivered identical lines of eight points, four steals and two assists.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center next week for their Great Northwest Athletic Conference openers, beginning their title defense against Concordia-Portland at 5:15 p.m. Thursday. Visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
