ANCHORAGE – Freshman
Rachel Ingram scored 21 points with a record-setting three-point display and the 13th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team used another dominant defensive effort to cruise past Concordia-Portland in both teams' Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball opener Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (8-1, 1-0 GNAC) also got 13 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five steals from junior center
Tennae Voliva as they improved to 9-0 all-time against their foes from Oregon.
The Cavaliers (1-8, 0-1) were led by 12 points and 12 rebounds from starting forward Riley Friauf, but the visitors could not overcome UAA's full-court press, which forced 24 turnovers and rushed them into .333 shooting.
"We did a nice job of following our game plan and using our pressure to establish a lead," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team has held its last six opponents to 57 points or fewer. "Our ball movement on offense was the key to getting a lot of open looks, and Rachel was there to knock a lot of those down. She showed tonight what kind of impact she can make in her four years here."
Ingram – who starred in basketball and cross country running at Colorado Springs Christian High School in Colorado – did all of her damage in just 12 minutes off the bench, hitting 7 of 10 from long range. Her seven treys broke the UAA rookie record of teammate
Jahnna Hajdukovich, whose record of six three-pointers last season at Alaska Fairbanks lasted just 11 months.
Senior point guard
Yazmeen Goo collected 11 points (6-6 FT), six rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals as 11 of 12 Seawolves found the scoring column, while senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin finished with six points, five rebounds and three steals.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to face Western Oregon (2-5, 0-1 GNAC). Surf to AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
