HONOLULU – Senior point guard
Yazmeen Goo scored 14 points and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team showed no rust from a 10-day layoff Wednesday, recording a 86-37 blowout of Menlo College in the Malaka Tours Hoop N Surf Classic at The Shark Tank.
The Seawolves (10-1) – ranked No. 10 in NCAA Div. II – also got 12 points apiece from starting guards
Safiyyah Yasin and
Rachel Ingram as they scored the first 14 points and led by double figures for the final 36 minutes.
The Oaks (6-3) – ranked No. 22 in NAIA Div. I – were led by 19 points from reserve forward Kiara Brown, but the Bay Area program was forced into 25 turnovers and outshot .485 to .271.
"Our pressure made an immediate impact and they were never able to adjust to it," said head coach
Ryan McCarthy, who captured his 200th victory in seven and a half seasons at UAA. "I thought overall our ladies responded well after that time off, playing loose and with confidence."
A freshman from Colorado, Ingram scored all 12 of her points in the opening 11 minutes as the Seawolves led 21-4 after the first quarter and 38-5 with 4 minutes left in the first half.
UAA's first-quarter defensive effort matched the program record for fewest points allowed since women's college basketball went to quarters in 2015.
Goo shot 6 of 8 from the field and dished four assists without a turnover, while Ingram shot 4 of 8 from long range. Junior guard
Kedranea' Addison came off the bench with eight points, three assists, no turnovers and five steals, sophomore guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich had nine points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting, and junior center
Tennae Voliva posted seven points and nine rebounds.
Eleven of the 12 active Seawolves scored at least four points, while 10 players grabbed at least three rebounds, with no one playing more than 21 minutes.
"We have a much tougher test coming up tomorrow night, so it was good to spread our minutes equally today and have fresh legs against a very good Div. II program," McCarthy added.
UAA finishes up at the Hoop N Surf Classic on Thursday when it plays Northwest Missouri State at 6 p.m. HST/7 p.m. AST at The Shark Tank. Live video (subscription) and stats will be available at portal.stretchinternet.com/hpusharks.
