HONOLULU – Junior center
Tennae Voliva and senior point guard
Yazmeen Goo came through with big second halves Thursday as No. 10 Alaska Anchorage earned a 56-45 women's basketball victory over Northwest Missouri State in the Malika Sport Tours Hoop N Surf Classic at The Shark Tank.
The Seawolves (11-1) got 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals from Voliva, while Goo had nine of her 11 points, five of her six assists and both of her steals in the final 20 minutes. Senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin also made several big plays in the late going, tallying 11 points in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
The Bearcats (5-5), from Maryville, Mo., were led by 13 points and three assists from guard Jaelyn Haggard, but the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association squad was outshot .523 to .311 and outrebounded 34-19.
"That game was much tougher than the final score indicated," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team only led by double figures for a total of 42 seconds, all in the final 3:22. "They played a slowdown style and were successful at keeping the score low, but our defense forced them into a lot of tough looks, and our offensive efficiency was enough to overcome more turnovers (19) than I would like to see."
Goo and Voliva each shot 5 of 7 from the field to spark UAA's best field-goal percentage of the season, while Yasin shot 4 of 8, and junior guard
Kedranea' Addison came off the bench with seven points on 3-of-3 shooting.
UAA led 21-19 at halftime after a second quarter that saw just 12 total points scored, but the Seawolves took control shortly after the break. After the Bearcats started with a three-pointer, Voliva gave the Seawolves the lead for good with a layup, and Goo followed with back-to-back transition layups for a 27-22 edge.
The game remained a one- or two-possession affair until Voliva started the fourth quarter with a 14-foot jumper to make it 40-32, and Addison scored twice in a 47-second span to make it 52-42 with 3:22 left. Haggard answered with a three-pointer 12 seconds later, but that would be the Bearcats' final points.
Junior forward
Sala Langi gave UAA a lift off the bench with five points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich matched her career high with three assists.
The Seawolves complete their Hawaii trip and their non-conference schedule with an NCAA Div. II West Region contest Sunday at 2 p.m. AST at Hawaii-Hilo.
