HONOLULU – Junior center
Oggie Pantovic scored six of his career-high 22 points in the final three minutes and the Alaska Anchorage survived a last-second three-point attempt by Hawaii Hilo to earn a 66-64 men's basketball victory Saturday in the D2 Power Invitational at the Hawaii Convention Center.
The Seawolves (9-4) also got 13 points and 10 rebounds from senior forward
Tyler Brimhall in their non-conference finale, improving to 6-1 against fellow NCAA Div. II West Region opponents.
The Vulcans (3-5) were led by a career-high 30 points from forward Kupaa Harrison as the Pacific West Conference team erased a 13-point deficit but was hurt by a 37-27 rebounding disadvantage.
"I'm extremely proud of our group to be able to grind out that game today and get a win," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "We came in undermanned and banged up, and we fought through foul trouble all night, but we found a way to get it done. Obviously we had a big advantage inside when Oggie was in the game, and our guards did a tremendous job of feeding him the ball. Hopefully we can use these few extra days off to heal up and be 100 percent for GNAC play after the New Year."
Coming off their first consecutive losses of the season, the Seawolves responded with a strong start, getting five points from sophomore guard
Tobin Karlberg during a 12-0 run to go up 14-4. Senior forward
Niko Bevens hit a three-pointer to give UAA its largest edge at 27-14, and the Seawolves went into the break with a 36-26 advantage.
Led by 8-of-15 shooting from the floor and 14 of 17 at the free-throw line from Harrison, the Vulcans stormed back to make it a single-digit game for the entire second half. Guard Elisha Duplechan hit a long jumper to knot it 49-49 with 8 minutes remaining, and gave his team the lead with a three-pointer one minute later.
With fouls building on each side, the teams traded baskets and free throws for the next four minutes, with Harrison nailing a jumper for a 62-61 Hilo lead at the 2:51 mark. UAA got the ball to Pantovic on a lob pass on the ensuing possession, and the 6-7, 225-pounder from Serbia was able to draw a foul and make both free throws.
After a miss by Duplechan, Pantovic scored again inside off a feed from DeAndre Osguiwe for a 65-62 lead.
Harrison made two free throws, and Pantovic answered by making one of two to account for the game's final point with 1:03 remaining.
Harrison would miss a three-pointer and Karlberg saw his layup attempt blocked as each team came up scoreless on its next possessions, and Hilo called timeout with 9.5 seconds left. Duplechan got the ball at the top of the key but could not find an opening as the clock wound down, and his fallaway three-point attempt was short at the buzzer.
Pantovic shot 8 of 10 from the field and grabbed six offensive rebounds – just missing his second double-double – while Karlberg finished with 14 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Bevens contributed 10 points, five rebounds and made a key block on Harrison with 4:35 remaining to protect what was then a 58-56 lead.
Osuigwe had three points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals as the Seawolves won despite being outshot .440 to .375.
The Seawolves will resume Great Northwest Athletic Conference play after the holidays, playing at Seattle Pacific on Jan. 2 at 4:15 p.m. AST.
