Oggie Pantovic had 16 points and 10 rebounds to propel a late comeback effort, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team suffered its first Great Northwest Athletic Conference loss of the season Thursday, 83-76 against Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion.
The Seawolves (9-5, 2-1 GNAC) also got 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from sophomore guard
Tobin Karlberg as they fell despite outshooting the hosts .492 to .444.
The Falcons (7-4, 3-0) were led by 18 points and five assists from guard Divant'e Moffitt and 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting from forward Gavin Long, helping the defending GNAC Tournament champs earn their seventh straight wins after and 0-4 start. SPU won the rebounding battle 38-30 and outscored UAA 14-2 on second-chance points and 18-5 at the foul stripe.
"It was a highly competitive game between two good programs," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "I thought the difference was the first five to six minutes of the second half. We got stops but didn't terminate the possessions. After they stretched the lead on second shots, we lost our offensive discipline for a few minutes. However, we regrouped a battled back to give ourselves a chance. We will watch the film, learn from our mistakes and prepare for tough game (Saturday) at Saint Martin's."
An early 9-0 run gave UAA its largest lead at 9-3, but the first half became a back-and-forth affair, with the seventh lead change coming on an SPU three-pointer to make it 38-36.
Back-to-back baskets by
Tyrus Hosley (10 points) kept it a one-point contest with 16:19 remaining, but the Falcons answered with a 9-0 run to grab a 53-43 edge.
Gabe Colosimo gave SPU its largest lead with a three-pointer to make it 63-49 midway through the half before point guard
Amari Hale and Pantovic sparked a Seawolf surge that made sliced it to 73-66 at the 4-minute mark.
A layup by Karlberg drew UAA even closer at 73-68, but the Seawolves could not convert on three straight chances to make it a one-possession game, and SPU sealed if from the foul stripe, where the Falcons made 18 of 19.
Pantovic shot 7 of 11 from the field and made a pair of blocks as the Utah State-Eastern transfer recorded his second double-double, while Karlberg reached double figures for the fourth game in a row, making 3 of 5 from deep and recording his first career multi-block game.
Hale had six points, no turnovers and a team-high four assists, and senior
Niko Bevens had nine points on 3-of-6 long-range shooting.
