UAA sinks WOU with OT buzzer beater, 88-86

ANCHORAGE – Junior center Oggie Pantovic had 20 points and 13 rebounds and junior guard Jack Macdonald capped an overtime comeback with a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer as Alaska Anchorage earned a thrilling 88-86 men's basketball victory over Western Oregon on Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (8-2, 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 19 points from senior forward Niko Bevens, while senior guard Tyrus Hosley had 16 points and six assists, including his feed to Macdonald on the game-winner.

The Wolves (5-2, 0-2) were led by 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists from guard Dalven Brushier and 12 points from forward Cameron Cranston, but the visitors could not capitalize on a seven-point lead with 2:19 left in the extra period.

"That was an amazing college basketball game, and I'm proud of every single one of our guys for helping us earn that win," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "We faced our biggest deficit of the night in overtime but we didn't hang our heads and made the big plays at the end. With the second half that Oggie was having, we figured they'd be sagging inside on our last possession, and Tyrus executed perfectly with his penetration opening up things for Jack in the corner."

Tied 30-30 at halftime, UAA came out hot in the second half, scoring the first 10 points to establish its largest lead. The visitors from Monmouth answered with a 6-0 run of their own, however, and continued to chip away by making nine of their 11 second-half three-point attempts.

WOU's Darius Lubom gave his team its first lead of the second half with a layup to make it 72-71 with 1:53 remaining. Pantovic scored inside 18 seconds later, only to have Lubom drain a three-pointer at the 1:24 mark. After empty possessions for both teams, Macdonald fed Pantovic for a low-post layup to tie it 75-75, and Lubom missed a running jumper to send it to overtime.

The Wolves continued their hot shooting in the extra session, with Cranston connecting on consecutive three-pointers to make it 86-79. UAA would clamp down on defense from there, however, shaving it to a one-possession game on two Bevens free throws at the 1:40 mark. Pantovic scored on another feed from Macdonald – one of the Aussie's seven assists – with 51 seconds remaining, and Lubom's layup attempt missed with 21 seconds left.

The Seawolves called timeout with 8.7 seconds on the clock to set up the winning play, with Hosley taking the inbounds pass. The transfer from Northwest Christian dribbled straight toward the basket as the clock wound down, kicking a pass to Macdonald in the corner, and the team's most experienced player calmly swished the game winner as the clock expired.

Pantovic scored 18 of his 20 points after halftime, shooting 10 of 17, along with two assists and two blocks. The Serb's 13 rebounds were the most by a Seawolf this year, while point guard DeAndre Osuigwe filled the stat sheet with six points, six assists and 12 rebounds.

Macdonald – who had missed his first three three-point attempts – finished with seven points and just one turnover in 33 minutes, while senior forward Tyler Brimhall contributed 11 points and five rebounds.

The Seawolves are off next week for final exams before playing their final three non-conference game Dec. 19-21 in Honolulu, starting against Arkansas-Monticello. Check the men's basketball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com for links to live video.
