SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Nationally 2nd-ranked Cal State San Bernardino got 20 kills from All-American outside hitter Alexis Cardoza to lead a sizzling hitting performance by the hosts in a 25-13, 25-17, 25-18 win over Alaska Anchorage at the D2 West Region Showcase on Thursday night at The Den.
The Seawolves (3-3) were led by nine kills from right-side hitter
Eve Stephens and seven kills on .538 hitting from middle blocker
Kayla McGlathery, but the visitors were outhit .388 to .144.
The Coyotes (5-0) – defending champions and preseason favorites again in the California Collegiate Athletic Association – never trailed during the match, getting eight kills on .636 hitting from Sascha Dominique, .486 hitting and eight digs from Cardoza, and 19 assists and 11 digs from setter Mehanna Ma'a.
"Any time you play a program with the tradition that San Bernardino has, you know you're going to be in for a difficult fight," said UAA head coach
Chris Green. "Unfortunately we could not match up with their All-American tonight, although our effort was good. We have two more big matches down here, so it's important to put this one behind us and focus on Friday."
The Seawolves got their best hitting effort of the year from McGlathery, who did not commit an attack error on 13 swings, while junior libero
Anjoilyn Vreeland made a team-high nine digs.
