Hot-hitting Seawolves fillet Falcons in Seattle, 3-0

UAA commits only 5 attack errors in GNAC opener

SEATTLE – Outside hitter Vanessa Hayes slammed 11 kills and setter Ellen Floyd dished 29 assists Thursday to propel a dominant hitting performance for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team in a 25-18, 25-15, 25-11 rout of Seattle Pacific at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

Sophomore Eve Stephens had seven kills and seven digs for the Seawolves (6-3, 1-0), who outhit the hosts .375 to .052 and won the blocking battle 8-1. Junior Kayla McGlathery added six kills, freshman Hannah Pembroke had five kills, and junior Vera Pluharova had four kills and six block assists as the UAA committed only five attack errors in both teams' Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener.

The Falcons (3-6, 0-1) got 10 kills from Maddie Batiste and a match-high 15 digs from Mallie Donohoe, but SPU was hurt by 24 attack errors and 10 service errors.

"We were efficient and did a fantastic job of making SPU pay for its mistakes tonight," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose Seawolves won their eighth in a row at Royal Brougham. "I thought we executed our offense with a level of confidence that I hadn't yet seen this season, so that's very encouraging as well."

After dropping the first three points of the match, UAA would respond quickly, taking the lead at 6-5 on a kill by Pluharova and extending throughout. The Seawolves never trailed in the second as Hayes blasted kills on two of the first three rallies, and Stephens capped the set with consecutive put-aways.

UAA led 13-9 in the third when an SPU service error opened the door on a 7-0 run, sparked by the serve of freshman Maggie Schlueter. The GNAC's service leader recorded two of her three aces during the clinching surge, improving her average to 0.71 aces per set.

Floyd also accounted for two kills, 10 digs and four block assists, while sophomore libero Talia Leauanae – returning to the lineup from an injury that sidelined her the first eight matches – came up with eight digs and a career-high three assists.

Winners of three in a row, the Seawolves conclude their road trip Saturday at 4:15 p.m. ADT against Saint Martin's (0-10, 0-1) in Lacey, Wash.

NOTES: SPU's 44 total points marked the fewest allowed by the Seawolves against the Falcons since the NCAA went to 25-point rally scoring in 2008 … UAA has now won 12 of the last 13 overall to draw its series deficit against SPU to 29-27 … a 2018 redshirt alongside Schlueter, Pembroke had her best offensive performance thus far, hitting .500 without an error … Floyd moved up to No. 14 on UAA's career assists list, now with 1,188 … Hayes is now just six kills short of becoming the 18th Seawolf in program history with at least 750 … now with 80 victories in Green & Gold, Hayes needs just one more to tie Tracy Zink (1987-90) and former teammate Leah Swiss (2014-17) for No. 6 on UAA's career list … UAA will be trying to extend its longest win streak against any opponent Saturday in Lacey, having beaten Saint Martin's 22 matches in a row.
