Sophomores stoke Seawolves to 3-1 victory in Lacey

Stephens ties career high with 23 kills as UAA wins fourth in a row

LACEY, Wash. – Ellen Floyd dished 52 assists and fellow sophomore Eve Stephens tied her career high with 23 kills Saturday to propel the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its fourth straight win, 25-12, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20, over Saint Martin's at Marcus Pavilion.

The Seawolves (7-3, 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 kills from junior middle blocker Kayla McGlathery as they extended their school-record series winning streak to 23 in a row over Saint Martin's.

The Saints (0-11, 0-2) were led by nine kills and seven digs from outside hitter Ililani Kamaka and 25 digs from libero Kiana Pel, but the hosts were outhit .284 to .059.

"The focus we showed in the first two sets was not there entirely for the last two," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "Fortunately we played well enough in the fourth set to get the win. Ellen made some good decisions on her sets, and Eve kept coming through with big kill after big kill. We are happy to be 2-0 in the league, especially with our first three matches being on the road."

UAA dominated the opening frame behind six kills from Stephens – the GNAC's kills leader with 3.68 per set entering Saturday – and three blocks from junior Vera Pluharova, outhitting the hosts .343 to .000.

Leading 9-7 early in the second, the Seawolves took control thanks to a 4-1 run that featured a pair of kills by both Stephens and McGlathery. UAA had its best hitting performance of the night at .406 in the second, but the momentum would not carry over to set three.

After scratching back from an early deficit and taking the lead at 19-18 on a Stephens back-row kill, the Seawolves fell victim to 4-0 Saints run. UAA trailed 24-20 and fought off three set points before Saint Martin's claimed the frame on a kill by Alyssa Bartlett.

The fourth set featured 11 ties and five lead changes, however UAA was able to pull away late. Stephens gave the Seawolves the lead for good at 15-13 on back-to-back kills, and the visitors clung to a 20-18 edge after a kill by Kamaka. Floyd set McGlathery for a smash on the next point, and the setter did it herself on the next play, looking like a pin hitter as her kill caromed off the Saints block for a 22-18 advantage. Saint Martin's repelled two match points before Stephens sealed it from the right side, tying her career high on the final rally.

Stephens matched the 23 kills she put up in a 5-set non-conference win last year at Rocky Mountain, while collecting two more kills than her previous best in a GNAC contest. The right-side hitter from Palmer also picked up nine digs.

Sophomore libero Talia Leauanae also earned a career high with 16 digs, and freshman outside hitter equaled her personal best with seven kills on .429 hitting.

Floyd added 11 digs to go with her season-high 52 assists, and senior outside hitter Vanessa Hayes notched seven kills and four aces.

UAA travels north Tuesday for a 7 p.m. match against longtime rival Alaska Fairbanks (5-5, 2-0), before making its GNAC home debut Saturday night against Montana State Billings. Call 907-786-1562 or visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
