FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
Eve Stephens notched a match-high 15 kills by it wasn't enough to offset a tough night in the service game Tuesday for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team as it suffered a 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-22 loss to Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.
The Seawolves (7-4, 2-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 kills and five blocks from junior
Kayla McGlathery as their 4-match winning streak was stopped despite a .210 to .194 hitting advantage.
The Nanooks (6-5, 3-0) took temporary hold of first place in the early league standings thanks to 13 kills on .333 hitting from AveRee Reynolds and eight kills, 32 assists, four aces and nine digs by setter Cate Whiting.
UAF capitalized on a 53-44 lead in digs and an 11-6 edge in aces, while taking advantage of 15 UAA service errors.
"We needed to be better in every phase of the game to win this match tonight," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team suffered its first back-to-back losses against UAF since 2008. "Fairbanks responded well after the first set and became the aggressors, and we never answered, which is disappointing."
The Seawolves took the opening frame despite earning only seven kills, three coming from Stephens, the reigning GNAC offensive player of the week.
After UAF controlled the second set, the Seawolves rallied from an early 9-3 hole to take a 18-17 lead on a Stephens kill late in the third. But UAA's momentum ended abruptly after a 10-minute delay due to blood on the court. Following the delay, UAF ran off four straight points and took the set on a kill by Reynolds.
The Seawolves led throughout the early portion of the fourth but faded late again. A UAA setting error gave the Nanooks the lead for good at 18-17, and Reynolds pulled her club ahead 23-20 with her penultimate kill of the night. Stephens kept UAA alive with a kill to draw within 24-22, but Whiting fed Reynolds for the clinching kill on the next rally.
Sophomore setter
Ellen Floyd collected 34 assists and 13 digs in the loss, while sophomore libero
Talia Leauanae managed 11 digs and a career-best four assists.
The Seawolves return to Anchorage for their GNAC home opener, Saturday at 7 p.m. against Montana State Billings. Visit AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets.
