ANCHORAGE – Senior guard
Jack Macdonald scored 17 points on near-perfect shooting and junior center
Oggie Pantovic delivered 16 points Saturday to power the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to an 81-66 victory over Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (11-6, 4-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 points and two steals from senior guard
Tyrus Hosley as they shot a season-high 53.7 percent from the field, knocking down 14 of 29 three-pointers.
The Clan (10-5, 3-3) were led by 15 points apiece from guard Othniel Spence and forward Jasdeep Singh, but the visitors from British Columbia could not capitalize on an early eight-point lead and a 36-26 rebounding advantage.
"We got off to a rough start defensively, but our guys did a terrific job of making in-game adjustments and sticking with our game plan," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team was narrowly picked fourth behind Simon Fraser in the GNAC preseason coaches' poll. "Everyone did his job well tonight and our crisp ball movement was effective at getting some great looks for our shooters, who took advantage. This will be an important win for us when playoff power rankings come into play later this season."
Looking to bounce back from their first GNAC home loss this season, the Seawolves fell behind 20-12 when Singh came out hot, making his first five shots. Following a timeout, UAA answered quickly with a 15-0 run that changed momentum for good, getting a pair of three-pointers from Macdonald in the surge.
Pantovic scored inside and
Niko Bevens hit a three-pointer with four seconds on the clock to give UAA a 42-30 lead at halftime, although Simon Fraser sliced its deficit back to 45-39 with a 9-0 run early in the second stanza.
A one-year transfer from NAIA program Northwest Christian, Hosley helped the Seawolves regain their double-digit lead with back-to-back three-pointers, and Macdonald made it a 58-43 edge on a trey at the 11:28 mark.
UAA would keep its lead steady the rest of the way, growing as high as 80-60 in the waning minutes.
The teams' most experienced player, Macdonald shot 6 of 6 from the field, including five three-pointers, and dished five assists with just one turnover. The Melbourne, Australia, native also had a steal and three rebounds, with his only negative on the night being a missed free throw – his first time 25 attempts this year.
Pantovic shot 6 of 11 from the field and 4 of 5 at the free-throw line, along with five rebounds, three assists and no turnovers, while Bevens scored 11 points and sophomore guard
Tobin Karlberg had 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Junior point guard
DeAndre Osuigwe added six points, eight assists and two steals, and senior forward
Tyler Brimhall finished with seven points, five assists and a pair of steals.
The Seawolves improved to 21-1 all-time against the Clan, which lost its second in a row.
UAA returns to the road next week, starting with a 6:30 p.m. AST Thursday game against Central Washington in Ellensburg. Catch live video and stats for that contest at gnac.tv.
