ANCHORAGE – Junior center
Tennae Voliva scored 19 points and tied her career high with 12 rebounds Thursday to propel 7th-ranked Alaska Anchorage into sole possession of first place in the Great Northwest Athletic with a 73-58 victory over Northwest Nazarene at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (16-1, 6-0 GNAC) also got 18 points from senior guard
Safiyyah Yasin as they ran their winning streak to 11 games and stopped the Nighthawks' eight-game winning streak. Senior point guard
Yazmeen Goo added nine points, four assists and four steals to help UAA to its second-best field-goal percentage of the year at 52 percent.
The Nighthawks (10-4, 5-1) got 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting and five assists from All-GNAC senior guard Avery Albrecht, but the rest of the visitors from Nampa, Idaho, combined to make just 14 of 42 shots.
"Obviously this is a game that both teams had circled on their calendars, so it's an understatement to say this was a satisfying victory," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team lost last year's GNAC Tournament title game to NNU, before knocking off the Nighthawks in the second round of the NCAA Tournament the next week. "I was extremely proud of the way we executed our defense after our halftime adjustments. To hold a team that offensively skilled to just 20 points in the second half is a huge accomplishment, and Tennae took another big step toward becoming a dominant inside force tonight."
Despite trailing 18-9 after six minutes, the Seawolves roared back and took control with a 24-4 run over the next seven minutes. Goo pushed UAA's lead to 46-38 with the last three points before the break, but NNU rallied to within 51-45 on an Albrecht three-pointer early in the third quarter.
Following a long scoreless drought for both teams, Voliva grabbed an offense rebound and earned a traditional three-point play to increase UAA's lead to 55-45 with 2:38 left in the third, and the Seawolves kept the advantage in double figures the rest of the way.
Leading 63-51, Yasin delivered a dagger three-pointer to stem a mini-run by the visitors as UAA's leading scorer shot 6 of 14 from the field and 5 of 5 at the charity stripe, along with four assists.
Voliva earned her fourth double-double and first in a GNAC game, shooting 8 of 12 from the field and tying her career-best rebounding total for the third time. Her 19 points were one shy of her career high and were her most in a GNAC game. The East Anchorage High School product added three steals and two blocks, helping UAA hold NNU to 38.8 percent shooting.
Eleven of the 12 Seawolves scored at least two points, with sophomore guard
Nicole Pinckney picking up six points and three assists.
The victory also extended three other impressive streaks for UAA, which has now won 22 straight games at the Alaska Airlines Center, 25 straight GNAC games, and 34 straight GNAC regular-season home games.
The Seawolves head north for their next game on Tuesday when they face in-state rival Alaska Fairbanks at 7 p.m. AST. Live video and stats for that game can be found online at gnac.tv.
