Big 3rd quarter helps #7 UAA extend streaks at UAF

FAIRBANKS – Junior center Tennae Voliva scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half and senior guard Safiyyah Yasin added 15 points Tuesday to help 7th-ranked Alaska Anchorage avoid an Alaska Fairbanks upset bid with a 79-67 women's basketball victory at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (17-1, 7-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a season-high-tying 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from junior forward Sala Langi as they extended a handful of long streaks, tying their program with a 26th consecutive league victory.

The Nanooks (6-10, 1-6) were led by 16 points from guard Sam Tolliver and 10 points and nine rebounds from Jocelyn Gandara, but the hosts could not capitalize on late second-quarter lead as they fell for the 25th straight time to their intrastate rival.

"UAF outplayed us, but we were fortunate enough to make some timely shots tonight," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team fought to a virtual tie with the hosts in rebounds (30-29 UAF) and field-goal percentage (UAA .438 to .436). "We were focused on trying to control the 'controlables,' and that did not happen. Luckily our depth played a key role helping us escape here with a win tonight."

UAA led 31-26 when Langi connected on a jumper midway through the second quarter, but Tolliver sparked a 12-2 surge for UAF, and Caitlin Pusich made it a 39-35 Nanook lead with 1:25 on the clock. The Seawolves finished with the final two baskets – getting a layups from Lauren Johnson and Yasin – to knot the score at the half, and UAA would take control early in the third quarter.

Trailing 42-41, Yasin fed Voliva for an inside basket, and the pair combined for the first eight points of an 11-0 run.

UAA forged a 57-44 lead when Yasin opened the fourth quarter with a jumper in the lane, although the Seawolves would have to fight off two more UAF runs. With the lead cut to 57-50, Yasin answered with a driving layup at the 6:16 mark, and Johnson sailed in for a layup one minute later to make it 63-52.

Voliva shot 7 of 11 from the field and added five rebounds, while Yasin shot 6 of 13 and snagged four steals. Langi tied her season scoring high for the fourth time, while dishing two assists and grabbing a career-high five steals.

Johnson finished with eight points on 4-of-4 shooting and did not commit a turnover in 18 minutes, while point guards Stephanie Jackson (8-8 FT) and Yazmeen Goo also delivered eight points apiece.
