Records fall in 80-33 thumping of Yellowjackets

ANCHORAGE – Junior guard Lauren Johnson scored a career-high 16 points and 7th-ranked Alaska Anchorage dominated from start to finish Saturday, setting a handful of school record in an 80-33 women's basketball blowout of Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (18-1, 8-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got nine points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals from junior point guard Stephanie Jackson as they scored on their first eight possessions and led by double figures for the final 35 minutes.

The Yellowjackets (9-7, 4-4) were led by seven points from reserve forward TyLee Manuel and a game-high eight rebounds from Janessa Williams, but the visitors were outshot 50 percent to 22.6 percent overall and outrebounded 39-30.

UAA's margin of victory was its largest in 64 all-time meetings against MSUB, while the Yellowjackets were held under 40 points for the first time since February 2007 and managed to avoid setting their all-time scoring low by just one point.

"We were not pleased with our performance Tuesday, and I think our ladies responded perfectly," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team was coming off a 79-67 road win over last-place Alaska Fairbanks. "It's not often as a coaching staff that you can find virtually no faults in your team's performance, but this was one of those nights. We will celebrate this one for five minutes and get refocused for a couple huge road games next week."

Entering with a 12-game winning streak, the Seawolves dominated from the opening tip, setting a school-record for largest lead after the first quarter at 28-5. UAA shot 11 of 14 in the opening 10 minutes while MSUB made just 2 of 12, and the teams played even in the second quarter for a 42-19 Seawolf halftime advantage.

UAA ended any remaining drama in the third quarter, pitching a 23-0 shutout that featured 0-of-11 shooting and six turnovers by the visitors. The zero points marked just the second time (since women's college basketball went to quarters in 2015-16) that the Seawolves have blanked an opponent in a quarter and the first time against a fellow NCAA Div. II program. The 23-point different was also UAA's largest in the third quarter against a D-II foe, and the 14 points allowed in the second half tied for the fourth-fewest against a D-II opponent in the final 20 minutes.

UAA claimed another program record with its 27th straight GNAC victory, and extended another mark with its 35th straight GNAC regular-season home win.

All 12 active Seawolves scored at least two points and snagged at least one rebound, including the first two points and first rebound for freshman guard Sierra Tate, who made her Alaska Airlines Center debut after having her redshirt status lifted recently.

Sophomore guard Nicole Pinckney scored nine points on 3-of-4 three-point shooting and freshman guard Rachel Ingram was 2 of 3 from long range as UAA shot a season-high 50 percent (11 of 22) beyond the arc. Senior point guard Yazmeen Goo added eight points, five assists and two steals as she claimed her 90th win in a Seawolf uniform (No. 11 all-time) and pushed her career assist total to 399.

The Seawolves stretched their GNAC lead to two games over Northwest Nazarene and Simon Fraser with the win and NNU's home loss to Western Washington on Saturday, with the opening round of league play concluding next week.

UAA faces one of its toughest road trips of the season with games at WWU (11-5, 5-3) on Thursday and SFU (11-7, 6-2) on Saturday. Both games tip at 6 p.m. AST and can be seen live at gnac.tv or portal.stretchinternet.com/uaa.
