BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Freshman guard
Rachel Ingram scored 14 points to lead a comeback effort but the 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could not shake a slow start Thursday, seeing a handful of long winning streak end with a 71-64 loss to Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (18-2, 8-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points from junior center
Tennae Voliva as they lost a league game for the first time since Dec. 1, 2018, snapping a 27-game streak that concluded as the second-longest since the GNAC was founded in 2001-02.
The Vikings (12-5, 6-3) got a game-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from Emma Duff, plus 10 points and eight assists from guard Lexie Bland as the hosts shot a blazing 61.7 percent (29 of 47) from the field, including 7 of 13 from long range.
"Western deserved to win that game," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team also saw its overall 13-game win streak and an 8-game win streak over WWU fall by the wayside. "We dug ourselves a big hole at the beginning of the game, which we couldn't afford to do that against such a talented opponent. Clearly, preparation in terms of coming out and simply competing wasn't there, and that's on me."
Coming off a 93-82 road upset of second-place Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, the Vikings jumped on the Seawolves early, scoring on six of their first seven possessions to grab a 13-1 lead.
UAA could not get closer than seven points as WWU answered seemingly every basket in the first 30 minutes, claiming a 42-31 halftime advantage and a 58-46 lead after three quarters.
The Seawolves trailed 64-49 with eight minutes left before making a final comeback attempt, cutting it to 67-62 on consecutive transition layups by freshman
Sierra Tate and junior
Lauren Johnson. UAA would miss several chances to make it a one-possession affair, however, committing four turnovers and missing both of its field goal attempts in the final three minutes.
Ingram was the lone offensive bright spot on a night that saw leading scorer
Safiyyah Yasin plagued with foul trouble and finish with just four points. Coming into the game with 35 three-pointers on the season, Ingram shot 5 of 7 overall and nailed 4 of 6 treys to claim the Seawolves' rookie record, previously held by Jessica Madison (36 in 2012-13).
Voliva grabbed a team-high five rebounds and Johnson finished with nine points on 4-of-4 shooting for the Seawolves, who committed 22 turnovers.
UAA faces another stiff test Saturday when it travels to Simon Fraser (13-7, 7-2) – currently tied with NNU for second place – for 6 p.m. AST tip in Burnaby, British Columbia. Check GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
