ANCHORAGE – Sophomore guard
Tobin Karlberg had career highs of 22 points and nine rebounds Thursday and junior point guard
DeAndre Osuigwe delivered a double-double to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team repel a Saint Martin's comeback for a 92-81 victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (14-8, 7-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points from senior forward
Niko Bevens as they rode a school-record 15 three-pointers in the first half to their third straight victory.
The Saints (4-16, 2-9) were led by 26 points and nine rebounds from forward CJ Jennings, but the defending GNAC regular-season champs could not claw all the way back from a 21-point deficit as they dropped their 12th game in a row.
"Our energy and our shot making was terrific in the first half," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team built a 59-41 halftime advantage by making 15 of its first 20 threes. "I thought we relaxed at halftime and lost our concentration in the second half, though. Fortunately our lead was large enough that we could hold on, but we've got to have a better 40-minute effort than we did tonight."
Looking for its first season sweep of Saint Martin's since 2016-17, UAA shot a blazing 69 percent (20 of 29) in the opening 20 minutes, made all four of its free throws and collected an assist on every basket, while committing just three turnovers.
Four Seawolves scored double figures in the opening 20 minutes, including
Tyrus Hosley, who finished with 12 points (4-6 3FG), and fellow senior guard
Jack Macdonald, who tallied 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting (2-3 3FG), plus four assists without a turnover.
Despite leading 66-46 with 17 minutes left, UAA would have to respond when the visitors from Lacey, Wash., rallied within 68-63 on a driving layup by Jennings at the 12:29 mark.
Bevens stemmed the Saints' run with his fourth and final three-pointer, and Osuigwe pushed the back to double figures with a pair of free throws with 10 minutes left.
The Saints pulled within 88-81 with 39 seconds remaining but could get no closer.
Osuigwe – a transfer from State College of Florida – had 12 points and earned his first double-double was a Seawolf with a UAA season-high 11 assists.
Karlberg shot 7 of 10 from the field, 5 of 7 from long range and dished six assists – one shy of his career high – without a turnover as the former local Grace Christian High School star topped his previous scoring high by one point.
Junior center
Oggie Pantovic made it six Seawolves in double-figure scoring, with the Serb collecting 11 points (3-5 FG, 5-6 FT), along with four rebounds and three of UAA's season-high 30 assists.
UAA made at least 18 three-pointers for the fourth time this season, finishing 18 of 35 (.514) from deep. The Seawolves' six turnovers were just one off a season-low as well, equaling the 15th-fewest for a UAA team in the program's 43-year history.
UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. to face league-leading Seattle Pacific (14-5, 10-1 GNAC), which had its 14-game winning streak snapped Thursday at Alaska Fairbanks.
