First-place Falcons edge Seawolves, 79-73

ANCHORAGE – Junior center Oggie Pantovic had 21 points and 12 rebounds but it wasn't quite enough for the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team Saturday as league-leading Seattle Pacific held on for a 79-73 men's basketball victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (14-9, 7-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 17 points apiece from guards Tyrus Hosley and Tobin Karlberg as their three-game winning streak came to an end.

The Falcons (15-5, 11-1) were led by 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting from starting forward Shaw Anderson, plus 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds from reserve guard Braden Olsen, helping the visitors shoot 56 percent and a sweep of the season series.

"I loved our effort and we took very good care of the ball tonight, but we didn't defend well enough in the first half and just couldn't get enough shots to go down in the end," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team committed just seven turnovers.

In a game that featured four ties and 13 lead changes, the Falcons took a 48-40 lead at the half and stretched their largest advantage to 55-44 on Olsen's three-pointer at the 14:16 mark.

UAA answered with a 12-0 run, however, taking its first lead since the opening minutes on a Hosley three-pointer with 10:44 remaining.

Karlberg nailed one of his four three-pointers and Jack Macdonald made two free throws to forge a 61-61 tie with 8:53 left, before SPU took the lead for good on a feed from Olsen to Anderson.

The Seawolves shaved a 71-63 deficit two points on a 6-0 scoring run by Pantovic, and Karlberg kept it a one-possession game at 73-71 with a layup at the 1:57 mark. The Falcons answered with four straight free throws to stretch the lead, though, and the hosts would connect for just one more field goal when Karlberg scored to make it 77-73 with nine seconds left.

Pantovic shot 6 of 11 from the field, including his only three-point attempt, and 8 of 8 at the free-throw line as the Serb collected his team-high fourth double-double.

Karlberg finished 6 of 10 from the field and 4 of 7 from deep, along with three assists, three steals and no turnovers, while Hosley shot 5 of 11 from long range and dished a pair of assists.

Macdonald had eight points, and junior point guards Amari Hale and DeAndre Osuigwe combined for 11 assists in the loss.

UAA returns to the road for five of its final eight regular-season games, starting Thursday at 6 p.m. AST against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, British Columbia. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
