Hajdukovich propels record-setting rout of Nanooks

ANCHORAGE – Sophomore guard Jahnna Hajdukovich scored a career-high 23 points, knocking down seven of her team's school-record 16 three-pointers, to lead the 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 90-36 blowout of Alaska Fairbanks on Tuesday at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (24-2, 14-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points and four assists from senior guard Safiyyah Yasin as they won their sixth straight game and extended their winning streak to 26 against their northern rivals.

The Nanooks (7-17, 2-13) were led by 13 points and six rebounds from the GNAC's leading scorer, guard Jocelyn Gandara, but the visitors were outshot .429 to .197 and outrebounded 57-37.

"I was very pleased with our effort from start to finish tonight," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team shot 16 of 34 from long range and led 21-5 after the opening quarter. "We did not take our opponent lightly and showed the same focus and intensity that we displayed the last three games. Our (three-point) shooters were aggressive in taking advantages of their opportunities, and it was fun to watch them connect like that."

UAA scored the game's first seven points and used first-half runs of 15-0 and 11-0 to earn a 46-15 halftime lead – their largest against a Div. II opponent this season. Yasin shot 6 of 10 and scored all of her points in the opening 20 minutes, while junior center Tennae Voliva had nine of her career-high-tying 12 rebounds before the break. Voliva also tied her career high with three blocks, along with three steals and two charges drawn.

The Seawolves led by at least 31 points for the entire second half, surpassing a 98-46 score from Feb. 27, 2010 for the largest margin in the 102-game series history. UAA also extended program-best streaks to 38 straight GNAC regular-season home wins, 26 straight wins at the Alaska Airlines Center, and 15 straight home wins over UAF.

UAA got 12 points on 3-of-6 shooting, four rebounds and two blocks from junior wing Lauren Johnson, plus nine points (3-6 3FG) and a personal-best three assists from freshman guard Rachel Ingram, as it erased the former record of 15 threes, accomplished twice during the 2015-16 NCAA runner-up season.

Junior guard Stephanie Jackson got in on the career-high parade as well, with the Santa Fe (Fla.) College transfer accounting for 10 rebounds and six assists.

Hajdukovich shot 7 of 11 from long range to equal the seventh-most treys in a game for a Seawolf. The former Fairbanks resident and Anchorage Dimond High grad added four rebounds, three assists and three steals as she surpassed her previous high of 22 points in last season's road win over UAF.

The Seawolves make a quick turnaround for their next game, traveling to Montana State Billings for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff Thursday against the Yellowjackets. Live video and state will be available at gnac.tv.
