Seawolves fend off 'Jackets in Billings for 25th victory

BILLINGS, Mont. – Senior guard Safiyyah Yasin scored 22 points and junior center Tennae Voliva posted a double-double Thursday to lead the 8th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to an 83-69 victory over Montana State Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium.

Voliva had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Seawolves (25-2, 15-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference), who clinched their program's sixth straight 25-win season and drew closer to securing their sixth straight GNAC regular-season title.

The Yellowjackets (12-12, 7-8) were led by 14 points and 13 rebounds from sophomore center Taryn Shelley, but the hosts were outshot .468 to .356 and outrebounded 43-32.

"We traveled to four states for four games in eight days, on the second round of playing everyone, so to say I'm proud of these ladies is an understatement," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team will get six days to rest before its next contest. "We had some tired legs, but we pushed through against a Billings team that played very well. Our seniors are starting to mature in front of our eyes, and I'm very excited for them to play in front of great crowds in their final home games next week."

Playing 26 days after an 80-33 blowout of MSUB in Anchorage, the Seawolves had to fight much harder in the rematch. UAA built a 36-23 lead midway through the second quarter, only to see the hosts make nine of their first 15 three-point attempts, rallying for a 46-46 tie on TyLee Manuel's layup with 4:27 left in the third quarter.

Seawolf reserve forward Kimani Fernandez responded with a putback basket, however, and then drew a flagrant offensive foul from Manuel on the other end, leading to two free throws from freshman Rachel Ingram. That sequence started a 15-2 run that would eventually be the difference, as Fernandez tied her season high with eight points on 4-of-5 shooting.

The Yellowjackets got as close as 74-66 with 2:30 remaining, but the Seawolves iced the win by making nine of 12 free throws in the final 80 seconds.

Senior point guard Yazmeen Goo missed tying her career high by one point, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting, along with five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Voliva shot 5 of 7 from the field to earn her sixth double-double, while Yasin added eight rebounds.

The victory helped UAA retain a 2.5-game lead over Northwest Nazarene for the GNAC title. After NNU (17-6, 12-3) plays at 3rd-place Simon Fraser on Saturday, both teams will have four games remaining in the regular season. The Seawolves swept the regular-season series from NNU, meaning they can clinch the top seed for the Mar. 5-7 GNAC Tournament with just two more victories.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center for its final two home games next week, taking on Simon Fraser on Thursday (7 p.m.) and Western Washington on Saturday (7:30 p.m.) for 'senior night.' Surf to AlaskaAirlinesCenter.com for tickets and parking information.
