ANCHORAGE – Senior guards
Safiyyah Yasin and
Yazmeen Goo combined for 35 points and sophomore forward
Kimani Fernandez added seven points and nine rebounds Thursday to help 7th-ranked Alaska Anchorage move closer to a sixth straight Great Northwest Athletic Conference title with an 85-61 women's basketball victory over Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (26-2, 16-1 GNAC) got 19 points, three assists and two steals from Yasin and a career-high-tying 16 points – all the first half – from Goo, who also dished six assists. Junior wing
Lauren Johnson added 10 points for UAA, which clinched a first-round bye for the Mar. 5-7 GNAC Tournament in Seattle and shaved its magic number to one to clinch at least a share of the GNAC regular-season crown.
The regionally 9th-ranked Clan (16-11, 11-6) were led by 23 points from forward Jessica Jones and 10 rebounds from reserve forward Sophie Klassen, but the NCAA's lone Canadian program was outshot .452 to .304.
"I thought we lacked focus for a time in the second quarter, but otherwise we're very pleased to come away with a quality win against a regionally ranked opponent in Simon Fraser," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team has three games remaining and a two-game lead over Northwest Nazarene atop the GNAC standings. "Our two seniors – Yazmeen in the first half and Safiyyah in the second – really stepped up again with outstanding performances. Those two were not about to let us lose this one."
One day after premiering at No. 3 in the initial NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, the Seawolves took the lead from the outset and built a 30-10 advantage early in the second quarter. The Clan sliced their deficit to 35-26 with 34 seconds left in the half, but UAA answered with a 9-1 run in the final 21 seconds, thanks to a technical foul and two SFU fouls. Goo scored six points in the final 12 seconds by herself, stealing the ball and drawing an intentional foul on a traditional three-point play, then beating the buzzer with an off-balance three-pointer to grab a 44-27 lead.
Sophomore guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich hit a three-pointer to open the second half as the Seawolves led by at least 19 points the rest of the way, shooting 9 of 23 from deep as a team and outrebounding the Clan 41-37.
Goo shot 4 of 4 from the field, including 2 of 2 on three-pointers, and 6 of 7 at the free-throw line to equal her career-high scoring total for the second time this month, while Yasin shot 7 of 13 from the field and 2 of 4 on treys.
Junior forward
Sala Langi finished with eight points and a season-high eight rebounds for the hosts, while Fernandez shot 3 of 6 and grabbed a season-high nine boards, along with two steals and a career-high two blocks.
Hajdukovich had eight points and junior center
Tennae Voliva tallied seven points, six rebounds and two assists in just 12 minutes despite playing the entire game in foul trouble.
Still with a chance to host the NCAA Div. II West Regional Championships (Mar. 13-16), the Seawolves take the Alaska Airlines Center court for the final time in the regular season when they face regionally 7th-ranked Western Washington (18-7, 12-5) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Goo and Yasin will be honored in pregame 'senior night' ceremonies as UAA aims to avenge its lone conference loss – a 71-64 setback Jan. 23 in Bellingham – against the Vikings.
