Pantovic, Hosley propel 90-89 OT win over Nighthawks

ANCHORAGE – Junior center Oggie Pantovic grabbed 15 rebounds and scored 26 points, including the tie-breaking three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining in overtime, to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team rally for a 90-89 victory over Northwest Nazarene at the Alaska Airlines Center on Thursday night.

The Seawolves (15-11, 8-7 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points and a career-high 11 assists – without a turnover – from senior guard Tyrus Hosley as they avoided a four-game losing streak and salvaged a season series split with the visitors from Nampa, Idaho.

The Nighthawks (12-8, 9-6) were led by 14 points and 11 rebounds from senior forward Olamilekan Adetunji, but could not protect a 52-40 halftime advantage in a game that was statistically even in virtually every category.

"We played poorly in the first half, especially on the defensive end, but I thought our guys made some nice adjustments after the break that allowed us a chance to get back in it," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "In the second half, we played with a lot more poise and our shooters made the kind of big shots in crucial situations that you have to make to be a winning ballclub."

Coming off an overtime loss on Saturday at Western Washington, UAA found itself facing deficits of 54-40 and 64-53 early in the second half. NNU led 68-59 with 13 minutes left when Tobin Karlberg nailed a three-pointer to start a 13-3 run, which Niko Bevens finished with a trey to grab a brief 72-71 advantage.

After a 9-0 run by the Nighthawks, the Seawolves sliced their deficit to 80-76 on back-to-back layups from Pantovic, who shot 11 of 16 from the floor. NNU earned an 83-79 lead when Ezekiel Alley drove for a layup with two minutes left, and Pantovic answered with a pair of free throws just 12 seconds later.

Following defensive stops for both teams, the Seawolves got the ball back when Pantovic rebounded Bezzant's inside miss with 27 seconds remaining, and UAA coach timeout to set up a final play. Alley fouled Hosley with 6.1 seconds on the clock, and the transfer from Northwest Christian (Ore.) calmly swished both free throws following an NNU timeout. Bezzant drove full court for a game-winning attempt, but the junior guard slipped and was called for traveling with half a second left.

UAA trailed twice in the opening three minutes of the extra session, but Pantovic answered with a dunk and Hosley made two free throws for an 87-87 tie. Still deadlocked in the final minute, Hosley grabbed the rebound on Alley's three-point miss. With the shot clock winding down, Hosley then penetrated a kicked to Pantovic, who drilled a straightaway three-pointer at the 20-second mark.

Alley missed a chance to tie when his ensuing three-pointer bounced off, but Odetunji was there for the rebound and got fouled with 2.3 seconds on the clock. He made the first and tried to miss the second, but his second shot bounced off glass and through. UAA inbounded three-quarter court to Pantovic, who was fouled with 1.9 seconds showing. The Serb shot an airball on his front-end free-throw attempt to give the Nighthawks one final chance at a full-court inbounds and desperation shot, but Bevens knocked away the pass and time expired.

Pantovic also dished four assists as he became the first Seawolf since Corey Hammell, on Feb. 2, 2017, to grab at least 15 rebounds.

Karlberg finished with 14 points on 4-of-6 three-point shooting, senior guard Jack Macdonald had 13 points (5-10 FG, 3-6 3FG), five rebounds, six assists, two steals and just one turnover, and Bevens tallied 10 points (2-4 3FG) as the senior forward extended his streak to 33 straight games with at least one trey.

Point guard DeAndre Osuigwe and forward Tyler Brimhall chipped in seven points apiece for the Seawolves, who shot 14 of 31 from long range.

Currently tied for sixth place with Central Washington, UAA will host the Wildcats on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. Both clubs trail NNU and three other teams by just one game in the crowded GNAC standings, with five games left in the regular season.
