#5 Seawolves rout Wolves to claim outright title

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Senior guard Safiyyah Yasin scored 15 points to lead another balanced effort for the 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team Thursday, helping the Seawolves claim the outright Great Northwest Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 76-48 win over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (28-2, 18-1 GNAC) also got 12 points apiece – all on three-pointers – from guards Jahnna Hajdukovich and Rachel Ingram as they scored the game's first 10 points and nailed 10 first-half treys to cruise to their 10th straight victory.

UAA's outright title is its fifth in the last six seasons, having shared it with Northwest Nazarene in 2017-18.

The Wolves (5-21, 2-17) got 12 points from starting forward Rachel Rogers as the hosts lost their 13th in a row.

"I loved the way we came out of the gates focused tonight and took control of this one early," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team extended another program record with its 33rd win in a row against WOU. "We were able to spread the wealth offensively again, and our shooters seemed like they couldn't miss in the first half. It's exciting to realize another team goal with the outright championship, but we need to quickly move on to our next goals, which are finishing strong on Saturday and then getting ready for the postseason."

Entering at No. 2 in the latest NCAA Div. II West Region rankings, UAA hit its first four shots and led by double figures for the final 32 minutes. Hajdukovich and Ingram combined for five early three-pointers to stretch the advantage to 24-9 after one quarter, and another Ingram trey made it 40-19 at halftime.

Ingram and Jackson sank two more from deep to give the Seawolves a 50-21 lead midway through the third quarter, and the differential stayed between 25 and 31 the rest of the way.

UAA went 13 of 29 from long range to tie for the seventh-most three-pointers against an NCAA opponent and the second-most in a road game.

Yasin shot 5 of 8 from the field and grabbed five rebounds, while senior point guard Yazmeen Goo had seven points, four assists, no turnovers and three steals. Junior forward Sala Langi nabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and junior guard Stephanie Jackson added seven points (3-5 FG), five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

The Seawolves finish the regular season Saturday with a 3:15 p.m. AST opening tip at Concordia-Portland and will be the top seed for the GNAC Tournament, opening play in the semifinals Mar. 6 in Seattle. Those games will be available live online at gnac.tv.
