PORTLAND, Ore. – Senior guard
Tyrus Hosley paced a late comeback attempt with 19 points but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team came up just short Saturday, ending the regular season with a 72-69 loss to Concordia-Portland in front of a sold-out crowd at LCEF Court.
The Seawolves (18-13, 11-9 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 14 points on 4-of-5 three-point shooting from sophomore guard
Tobin Karlberg as they fell in a one-possession game for the second time in three days.
The Cavaliers (5-23, 4-16) were led by 26 points from Xavier Smith and 13 points and eight rebounds from El-roi Butler to conclude their program's history with a two-game winning streak. The university announced earlier this month that it would cease operations after this school year.
"It is a disappointing way to end a good three-week run," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team finished fifth in the final standings. "We had individuals who did not prepare mentally to face a team that was going to play at their level today, despite warnings from the coaches and a few team leaders. Congratulations to Coach (Rodrick) Rhodes and their entire program. I'm disappointed in our performance but very happy for them. In these troubled times, it could be any of us in their shoes."
Despite the loss, UAA has already clinched a spot in the Mar. 5-7 GNAC Tournament. The Seawolves will face 4th-seeded Northwest Nazarene in the quarterfinals Thursday afternoon in Seattle.
"It's now the postseason and a clean slate," Osborne added. "We will prepare for whoever we're matched up with and try to earn a spot the following week in the West Regionals."
Despite trailing 21-9 midway through the first half, the Seawolves rallied to tie it at 34-34 when junior guard
DeAndre Osuigwe swished a three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
Karlberg kickstarted a 7-0 run to begin the second half with a three-pointer and UAA led 48-41 with 13 minutes remaining. But the Cavaliers would tie in 55-55 on a Sweet jumper with 6:20 left, and surge ahead 68-60 as the clocked ticked under one minute.
Trailing 70-62 with 37 seconds left, Hosley answered with a personal 7-0 run. The Vancouver, Wash., native hit a jumper and followed with a three-pointer after the Cavs missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. UAA then got a steal and Hosley coverted a layup to make it 70-69 with 4.9 seconds remaining.
Smith nailed two free throws to make it a three-point game, and UAA was able to set up Hosley for a decent look from 28 feet, but the tying attempt bounced off as time expired.
Hosley shot 7 of 15 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds, while Osguiwe finished with 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting.
Junior center
Oggie Pantovic collected his ninth double-double with 12 points (4-11 FG) and 10 rebounds.
