ANCHORAGE –
Hunter Sweet tied his career high with 30 points and
Keegan Crosby grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds Saturday to propel Alaska Anchorage to an 81-66 men's basketball victory in the Seawolf Thanksgiving Classic at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (4-2) also got 15 points and nine rebounds from senior center
Oggie Pantovic as they outshot the visitors from Illinois .462 to .349 and outscored them 33-12 from the three-point line.
The Hawks (3-2), from the Great Lakes Valley Conference, were led by 13 points and seven rebounds from forward Malik Hardmon in the first-ever meeting between the NCAA Div. II programs.
"I thought it was a complete effort for the first 33 minutes, both offensively and defensively," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "We moved the ball well and played a smart game for the most part. There are still some things we need to clean up, but it was a good performance overall."
After surrendering the game's first six points, the Seawolves responded with a 15-2 run to take the lead for good, getting eight points from Sweet in the surge. UAA led 25-20 when
Tobin Karlberg started a 7-0 run with two free throws, and the lead grew to 46-31 at halftime.
The Seawolves pushed their largest advantage to 71-47 with eight minutes remaining as the Hawks never got closer than 14 points in the second half.
A senior forward from Beaverton, Ore., Sweet tied his career-high from 11 days ago at Hawaii Hilo with 8-of-15 shooting, including 6 of 9 from long range. The Concordia-Portland transfer added seven rebounds and a pair of assists.
Karlberg finished with 16 points, shooting 4 of 6 from the field and 7 of 7 at the charity stripe, while sophomore point guard
Caleb Larsen had eight points and a career-high seven assists.
The Seawolves face a rematch with 19th-ranked Hawaii Hilo (4-2) to conclude the Thanksgiving Classic at 4:15 p.m. Sunday at the Alaska Airlines Center. Hilo defeated UAA 75-72 in Hawaii on Nov. 16.
