Seawolves vanquish #19 Vulcans in OT, 100-97

ANCHORAGE – Oggie Pantovic scored eight of his 28 points in overtime and fellow senior David Rowlands had 22 points and seven assists Sunday to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 100-97 victory over 19th-ranked Hawaii Hilo in the finale of the Seawolf Thanksgiving Classic at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (5-2) also got 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists from junior guard Tobin Karlberg as they avenged a 75-72 loss from 12 days earlier in Hilo.

The Vulcans (4-3) were led by 29 points on 12-of-17 shooting and six assists from guard Darren Williams, while forward Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones had 12 points, nine rebounds and eight assists. Hilo shot 54 percent from the floor and 10 of 22 from long range, but Jamie Strong's potential tying three-point try rolled around the rim and out with half a second left in the extra session.

"I thought we persevered," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team committed just six turnovers. "We had some breakdowns defensively – I think I guys were a little too hyped up for the game, and that was a product of not playing for so long and finally getting used to playing big games again, but we'll get used to that. The big thing is that we didn't drop our heads and continued to battle, and made some big plays down the stretch both offensively and defensively. The other really important thing is that we didn't turn the ball over, and that got us nine more shots than they did. That's something we preach year-in and year-out, and the guys seem to be buying into it, and it paid off tonight."

The Seawolves trailed by eight early in the opening half before closing with an 8-0 run to take a 43-42 lead at the break. Things stayed tight the rest of the way, with the game featuring nine ties and nine lead changes.

Tied 74-74, UAA forged its biggest lead when Pantovic scored back-to-back inside baskets and completed a three-point play at the 3:10 mark. A steal and layup by Karlberg kept the advantage at 86-81 with 30 seconds left, but the Vulcans would rally within 88-86 on consecutive baskets from Williams.

UAA's Hunter Sweet – who finished with 16 points – missed a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining, and Hilo's Donald McHenry tied it with a layup with six seconds left. Seawolf forward Keegan Crosby got a good look from the corner but his three-pointer bounced off at the buzzer to send the game to the extra session.

Pantovic – who shot 12 of 19 from the field – took over at both ends in overtime, making four of his five shots and making a key block midway through the period. After the First Team All-GNAC center put back his own miss with 14 seconds left to give UAA a 98-95 lead, Hilo answered four seconds later with two free throws by McHenry. Rowlands was fouled on the inbounds and converted both free throws, and Strong got a good look but could not get the roll on the final shot.

Rowlands finished 8 of 8 from the charity stripe and made 4 of 7 from long range to earn his first 20-plus scoring effort as a Seawolf. The Hawaii Pacific transfer added six rebounds and committed only a pair of turnovers.

Coming off a 30-point effort in Saturday's 81-66 victory over Quincy, Sweet played the entire 45 minutes Sunday. Crosby logged 41 minutes and finished with seven points, six assists and no turnovers.

Along with his scoring, Pantovic added six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a career-high five blocks, without committing a turnover.

The Seawolves take a four-game winning streak into the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener next week when they face Saint Martin's on Thursday in Lacey, Wash. Surf to the UAA men's basketball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
