Seawolves outlast Saints in GNAC opener, 76-67

LACEY, Wash. – Tobin Karlberg drained six three-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points to lead the Alaska Anchorage to a 76-67 men's basketball win at Saint Martin's in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener for both schools Thursday at Marcus Pavilion.

"Great job by our guys defending and rebounding," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "Saint Martin's is a well coached, explosive offensive team, and our guys stepped up. We also did a tremendous job of defensive rebounding as they have two of the best offensive rebounders in the league. Offensively we executed well at times, especially late."

UAA won the rebounding battle, 37-31, thanks to a 15-point, 10-rebound effort from senior center Oggie Pantovic.

The Seawolves, who improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in league play, wasted no time jumping out to a 12-point lead, 17-5, less than six minutes into the contest thanks in large part to Hunter Sweet, who made his first five shots of the game. He would finish with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Sweet's sharp shooting was contagious as the Seawolves shot 60 percent (17-28) in the first half, and UAA made 10 of its 14 three-pointers of the game in the first 20 minutes.

After leading 46-34 at the half, the Seawolves' lead grew to 50-34 one minute into the second half.

The Saints responded with a 9-0 run to close within  50-43 just three minutes later, but the Seawolves would keep them at bay for most of the half.

Saint Martin's (4-3, 0-1) would cut its deficit to 70-64 with 2:09 remaining before the Seawolves scored on three on their final four possessions to secure the win.

Pantovic recorded his second double-double of the season and 11th of his career, while senior point guard David Rowlands was the fourth Seawolf to finish in double figures, with 15 points.

Junior forward Keegan Crosby ended the night with a game-high five assists to go along with nine rebounds and five points.

UAA continues league play with a 3:15 p.m. AST tip Saturday at Western Oregon. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
