MONMOUTH, Ore. – Alaska Anchorage center
Oggie Pantovic had game-highs of 26 points and 11 rebounds, but the hot shooting of Western Oregon led the hosts to an 80-71 men's basketball victory Saturday at the New P.E. Building.
The Seawolves (6-3, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 14 points and four assists from senior point guard
David Rowlands as their five-game winning streak came to an end.
The Wolves (3-6, 2-0) were led by 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from guard Cameron Cranston, who hit back-to-back three-pointers with 90 and 60 seconds remaining to stop a Seawolf comeback. Forward Elihu Cobb added 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting off the bench for WOU, which shot 55 percent (31 of 56) from the floor and 58 percent (10 of 17) from long range.
"This is a disappointing performance in a number of areas," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "The Western Oregon coaching staff did a great job of preparing their team, and their guys executed. I did a poor job of preparing our team and we broke down in numerous areas where we are usually solid. We played undisciplined, did not follow our techniques and processes, and got what we deserved. That is on the coach."
The Seawolves led 27-22 when Pantovic nailed a three-pointer with eight minutes left in the opening half, but the hosts would answer with a 17-3 run to end the period, capped by a tip-in from Cobb at the buzzer.
The Wolves led 55-43 with 14 minutes left when the Seawolves made a huge surge. Rowlands and backcourt mate
Tobin Karlberg combined for 11 points, three assists and two steals in a 78-second span to bring UAA within a point, and Pantovic gave UAA a 56-55 lead off a feed from Rowlands with 11:24 left.
The Seawolves' momentum stalled, however, and the hosts answered with the next eight points to take control.
Hunter Sweet cut the deficit to 71-65 on a three-pointer with 2:34 to play before Cranston responded to seal the game.
"We have finals and eight days of practice before we play again to become more disciplined in our system," Osborne added. "We are still a work in progress and can definitely bounce back."
Pantovic shot 12 of 19 from the field as the senior collected his second straight double-double and 12th in 41 career games. The Serb collected seven of his rebounds on the offensive end.
Rowlands shot 5 of 10 overall and 4 of 7 from long range, while Sweet finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Karlberg tied for game-high honors with six assists, and Oregon native
Caleb Larsen had eight points on 3-of-3 shooting (2-2 3FG) off the bench.
