ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – The University of Alaska Anchorage ski teams were led by a pair of sophomores, Karly Coyne and Derek Dueling, in the freestyle races on day two of the Alaska Cup.
Kendall Kramer of UAF won the women's 10-kilometer freestyle race in a time of 31:33, followed by Coyne in 32:49. The podium finish was the second for Coyne who placed third in yesterday's classic race.
Pascal Paradise was fourth (34:28), and Tuva Granoien was sixth (36:01) for UAA.
Derek Dueling finished on the podium for the second straight day after finishing third in the 15-kilometer men's race in 49:19, 1:11 behind race winner Joe Davies.
Peter Hinds finished fourth, 30 seconds behind Dueling, in 49:49, and Sigurd Roenning was fifth in 50:23.
"Overall I am a little disappointed with the weekend," said associate head coach Trond Flagstad. "I thought we would do better today on a course we ski often in training. It's early in the season, and I am not too worried, I am confident that we will ski fast when we get closer to the NCAA Championships. The highlights of today were Karly and Derek who made the podium for the second day in a row. Great skiing from the two sophomores."
Alaska Fairbanks won the Alaska Cup for the first time since the 2016-17 season. The winner is determined by the cumulative time of the top-three finishers from each team in the four races.
The Nordic side of the ski team will compete at the US National Championships and Utah Invite in Soldier Hollow, Utah Jan. 2-7.
