PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore guard
Rachel Ingram scored a career-high 26 points on 8-of-11 three-point shooting Tuesday and
Stephanie Jackson added 15 points to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 93-76 victory over Warner Pacific at C.C. Perry Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (2-0) also got 10 points on 5-of-5 shooting from senior forward
Sala Langi as they tied the program record with 16 three-pointers in a game.
The Knights (2-3) were led by 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting from Gabriella Bruno as the NAIA squad outshot the Seawolves .543 (25 of 46) to .493 (36 of 73) from the field, but were hurt by 33 turnovers.
"We have a lot of room to improve defensively, but our shooters really showed what they're capable of today," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team played just its second counting game since last year's pandemic shutdown. "After a tough today yesterday (1 of 10 on three-pointers in a win at Multnomah), Rachel was able to quickly regain her confidence and show why she will be one of the elite shooters in the country the next three years."
As in Monday's 95-56 victory at Multnomah, the Seawolves started slow defensively again, trailing 25-22 after one quarter – the second-most points allowed by a UAA team since the game went to the quarter system six years ago – and seeing Warner Pacific shoot 64 percent from the field in the first half.
UAA began its surge when Ingram sliced into a 37-32 deficit with a three-pointer at the 4-minute mark of the second quarter. A Jackson trey gave the Seawolves the lead for good at 40-39, and the advantage stretched to 47-43 at halftime.
The Seawolves used a dominant third quarter to secure the win, outscoring the hosts 23-10.
A senior point guard, Jackson shot 6 of 9 from the floor, including both tries from long range, and added career bests of nine assists and five steals. Junior guard
Ra'Anaa Bey had nine points, three assists and three steals, and guard
Natalia Leguizamon contributed five points and five rebounds in her second game as a Seawolf. Junior forward
Kimani Fernandez led UAA with eight rebounds.
Ingram's eight three-pointers came one shy of Sasha King's school record (9 at Northwest Nazarene, Feb. 16, 2013) and made her just the second Seawolf in program history – joining Maria Nilsson (2006-08) – to make at least seven on multiple occasions. The Colorado native's previous career high 21 points came on 7-of-10 long-range shooting against Concordia-Portland in Dec. 2019.
The 16 team three-pointers tied the record set by last year's squad in a home win over Alaska Fairbanks.
The Seawolves have just two more counting games currently scheduled for this academic year, Apr. 16-17 at Southern Oregon.
