Spikers clinch winning mark with 3-1 win at UAF

FAIRBANKS – Eve Stephens had 16 kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team got 10 kills apiece from Hannah Pembroke and Mahala Kaapuni to earn a 25-19, 25-15, 18-25, 25-17 victory Friday over Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (8-1) also got 40 assists and four kills from junior setter Ellen Floyd as they extended the program record by clinching a winning record for the 13th straight season.

The Nanooks (5-5) were led by 11 kills and 10 digs from outside hitter AveRee Reynolds, but the hosts could not overcome big disadvantages in hitting percentage (.290 to .086) and blocks (9-5).

An outside hitter from Chico, Calif., Pembroke came one shy of her career high in kills, hitting a match-best .409. She added 10 digs to tie her career high and record her first career double-double, while her three straight aces in the second set sparked an ending 11-1 run in that frame.

"Hannah and Mahala really gave us a spark in those early sets," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "They were finding the holes in the defense and finishing with some powerful kills. Despite not playing well in the third set, I think we continued to improve and showed we have a lot of options we can turn to offensively."

UAA controlled the first set and ran away late with the second before UAF – which handed UAA its only loss of the season, 3-2, on Mar. 27 in Anchorage – bounced back in the third behind five aces and three Seawolf service errors.

UAF took a 9-7 lead early in the fourth and rallied for a 16-16 tie later in the set, but could not continue its momentum. Following a pair of Nanook errors, the Seawolves got consecutive kills from Stephens, Floyd and Nicole Blue to grab a 21-16 advantage, and the hosts' only remaining point would come on a UAA service error.

A freshman middle blocker, Kaapuni had career highs in kills, attack percentage (.350), digs (6) and aces (2), along with three block assists. The Hawaiian capped her night with the match-point kill as well.

Junior libero Talia Leauanae – the reining Great Northwest Athletic Conference defensive player of the week – made a match-high 21 digs along the back row, while Stephens and senior middle blocker Vera Pluharova led the way with five block assists apiece.

Pluharova added six kills without an attack error, and with her three blocks in the opening set the Czech moved into the top 10 on UAA's career total blocks list, now sitting ninth with 311 stuffs.

The Seawolves and Nanooks will meet for a rematch Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Patty Center. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
