HILO, Hawaii – Junior
Eve Stephens had 22 kills and 16 digs but it wasn't quite enough for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team Saturday as 25th-ranked Hawaii Hilo rallied for a 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 28-26, 15-13 victory over the Seawolves at Vulcan Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (11-3) also got a career-high 15 kills from Hilo native
Mahala Kaapuni and 31 digs from Maui native
Talia Leauanae as they suffered their second five-set setback of the season.
The Vulcans (14-2) were led by All-West Region outside hitter Bria Beale's 18 kills and 22 digs as the hosts avenged Friday's five-set loss.
"We fought hard," said UAA head coach
Chris Green. "We played well offensively in sets one and two but lost steam as the match went on. Credit to Hilo for some great defense keeping our hits off the court."
UAA pulled out a tight first set and had a chance to win in the fourth frame with a 23-19 lead, but Hilo rallied to take a 24-23 lead and eked out the set when Kamilla Marinas converted a pass from setter Kendall Kott to even the match minutes later.
The Seawolves rallied from a 5-0 hole in the fifth to take a 9-8 lead on a Beale attack error, before Hilo answered with a 4-1 run. UAA knotted it at 12 apiece when Kaapuni and fellow freshman
Nicole Blue teamed to block Beale, and the Seawolves fought off a match point at 14-12, but Hilo's Alexandria Parisian finished a long rally with a kill to end it.
Stephens came one dig shy of equaling her career high, recording her fifth double-double of the season. The All-American from Palmer will enter Sunday's spring season finale just nine kills away from becoming the 10th Seawolf in program history to reach the 1,000 mark.
Kaapuni surpassed her previous high by five kills and added four block assists, senior middle blocker
Vera Pluharova had nine kills on .368 hitting and six total blocks, and sophomore outside hitter
Hannah Pembroke notched eight kills and a career-high 14 digs.
Junior setter
Ellen Floyd finished with 46 assists, five kills on a career-high 24 attacks and four aces, while Leauanae surpassed the 30-dig plateau for the second time in her career.
The Seawolves end their spring campaign – the first such season in NCAA women's volleyball history, due to the coronavirus pandemic – Sunday at 11 a.m. ADT with a match against Hawaii Pacific (2-11).
