Panthers claw Seawolves in four

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – A fast start fizzled for the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team Saturday as Drury rebounded for a 20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-19 win over the Seawolves in the Nanook Classic at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (7-5) got a match-high 14 kills from junior Eve Stephens, but were hurt by 17 service errors and 20 attack errors in their non-conference finale.

The Panthers (6-2) were led by 10 kills and 12 digs from outside hitter Juliana Squire as the Great Lakes Valley Conference program won despite being outhit .236 to .230 and tallying 13 fewer kills (50-37) than the Seawolves.

"We cannot make that many mistakes and expect to win a match, especially against a quality opponent," said UAA head coach Chris Green, whose team's three-match losing streak ties its longest since 2013. "We need to get refocused this week as we head into conference play."

Coming off five- and three-set losses Friday, the Seawolves started fast against the Panthers, getting four kills apiece from Stephens and junior middle blocker Akor Maywin to grab the first set.

UAA had its opportunity to take control, tied 21-21 late in the second, before Drury took advantage of a Seawolf service error to go ahead, and closing with a 4-1 run.

After the Panthers controlled the third set, UAA battled back from a 13-7 deficit in the fourth, tying it 18-18 on a kill by Stephens. But the team from Springfield, Mo., made fewer mistakes and ended the match with a 7-1 surge.

Junior outside hitter Lisa Jaunet had 10 kills, senior middle blocker Vera Pluharova had eight kills on .412 hitting and four total blocks, and freshman outside hitter Mahala Kaapuni finished with nine kills in the loss.

Junior setter Ellen Floyd tallied 43 assists and 12 digs, while her three aces moved her into a tie for No. 3 on UAA's career list with 139.

After missing out on a Great Northwest Athletic Conference season in 2020, the Seawolves will play their first league match since Nov. 23, 2019 when they face Saint Martin's on Thursday (6 p.m. ADT) in Lacey, Wash.
