LACEY, Wash. –
Lisa Jaunet ripped 15 kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team finished with a seven-point run Thursday to rally for an 18-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13, 15-9 victory over Saint Martin's in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener at Marcus Pavilion.
The Seawolves (8-5, 1-0 GNAC) also got 40 assists and 18 digs from junior setter
Ellen Floyd as they produced a season-high four players with double-digit kills and outhit the hosts .244 to .081. Junior right-side hitter
Eve Stephens collected her fifth double-double of the season with 13 kills and 10 digs, along with a match-high six block assists, helping UAA extend its program-record win streak to 26 in a row over Saint Martin's.
The Saints (5-4, 0-1) were led by 13 kills from Tia Allen and 27 digs from Giselle Benetti, but none of their primary attackers managed to hit above .175.
"That was a gritty comeback against a tenacious team," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose squad avoided its first four-match losing streak since he took over the program in 2008. "Our block started working better late in the match, and we also played some good back-row defense on their attackers."
After hitting -.026 and committing 10 attack errors in the opening set, UAA calmed down and made just 11 attack errors in the final four frames, including none in a dominant fourth set.
The fifth would be a back-and-forth affair, with UAA claiming an 8-5 lead on Jaunet's final kill of the night. Saint Martin's responded with four straight points, taking a 9-8 edge when Jaunet hit into a block by Kylie Coon and Maddy Gooding. A surprise attack by Floyd tied it again, though, and the Saints hit the ball long on the next play. Freshman
Reilly Plumhoff served two aces in the next three points, and UAA closed it on a Saints setting error and a kill by Stephens.
Freshman outside hitter
Mahala Kaapuni had 12 kills and a career-high nine digs, and junior middle blocker
Akor Maywin collected a career high in kills for the third time in four matches, finishing with 11 kills on .389 hitting and five block assists. Senior middle blocker
Vera Pluharova collected eight kills on .316 hitting and three block assists.
UAA's back row was led by junior libero
Talia Leauanae, who had 15 digs and was 12-of-12 on serve receptions.
The Seawolves conclude their road trip with a match Saturday at noon ADT against Western Oregon (2-6, 0-1 GNAC) in Monmouth. Get direct links to live video and stats on the UAA Volleyball schedule page at GoSeawolves.com.
