UAA sweeps to 2-0 GNAC start at Western Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Lisa Jaunet and Eve Stephens combined for 25 kills and the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team rode a solid defensive effort to earn a 25-14, 25-21, 25-22 sweep of Western Oregon on Saturday at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (9-5, 2-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 33 assists, eight digs, three kills, three aces and three blocks from junior setter Ellen Floyd as they outhit the hosts .275 to .088 and extended their series streak to 16 wins in a row.

The Wolves (2-7, 0-2) were led by 10 kills apiece from Bailee Hartsook and Isabel Hurliman.

"Our outside hitters really played well today," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "We asked them to step up, and they did so this series. Our block is getting better also. We are excited to get back to Anchorage and play in front of our home fans next week."

UAA ran away with the first set with a .258 to -.075 hitting advantage and Stephens picking up five of her match-high 13 kills.

The second frame would be tighter as WOU erased an early 12-5 deficit and came back to lead 17-16 on a kill by Hurliman. After a 6-1 Seawolf run, the Wolves answered with three straight points, but their momentum fizzled with two consecutive attack errors, and Talia Leauanae closed it with an ace.

Jaunet would make the difference in the third, collecting six of her 12 kills in the final set – all after WOU had forged a 10-9 lead. The outside hitter from St. Denis, France, had three kills during a 6-1 UAA run that flipped the advantage, and delivered later to make it 21-18 and 24-20. The Seawolves won match point when Floyd converted an assist from Nicole Blue.

Jaunet finished with a career-best .476 attack percentage, while fellow outside hitter Mahala Kaapuni added seven kills on .250 hitting.

Leauanae made a match-high 12 digs for UAA and freshman Reilly Plumhoff added 10 digs. Senior Vera Pluharova led her team with four block assists.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center for two matches next week when they host Montana State Billings on Thursday (7 p.m.) and Seattle Pacific on Saturday (2 p.m.). Surf to GoSeawolves.com to purchase tickets. Masking is required.
