ANCHORAGE –
Eve Stephens had 14 kills and four aces to help the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team remain unbeaten in league play Thursday with a 25-20, 25-20, 25-14 sweep of Montana State Billings at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (10-5, 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got nine kills from freshman outside hitter
Mahala Kaapuni and 20 digs from junior libero
Talia Leauanae as they beat Billings for the 20th time in the last 21 meetings.
The Yellowjackets (4-7, 1-2) were led by 13 kills and 11 digs from outside hitter Bayli Monck, but were victimized by 20 attack errors and 11 Seawolf aces.
"Our serving was effective tonight, and that put us at an advantage" said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team remained one of two unbeaten teams in league play. "It was great to finally get back out there on our home court for league action again."
Playing their first GNAC home match in exactly 22 months, the Seawolves pulled away late in the first set to take early command. Tied 18-18, Kaapuni ripped three straight kills to kickstart the clinching 7-2 surge. Junior setter
Ellen Floyd – who finished with 29 assists – served two of her four aces in the opening frame as she moved into second place on UAA's career list, now with 146.
UAA led through most of the second set as well, extending a 15-14 lead to 18-14 on two more kills by Kaapuni. Sophomore outside hitter
Lisa Jaunet picked up one of her seven kills to make it 22-17, and the hosts clinched it on a pair of Billings attack errors.
Floyd served two more aces during a 10-1 run to begin the third set, and the Seawolves hit .312 to close it out.
Stephens registered a .343 attack percentage and Kaapuni hit .316, while senior
Vera Pluharova added four kills. Leauanae's 20 digs were the most in a three-setter by a Seawolf this year and second-most overall.
