#9 Seawolves pull away late to down 'Nooks, 76-50

ANCHORAGE – Freshman guard Jazzpher Evans scored a career-high 13 points and senior center Tennae Voliva tallied a double-double Saturday to lead another balanced effort for the 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team in a 76-50 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (10-1, 3-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got 10 points, a career-high-tying 12 rebounds, four assists and three steals from Voliva as they led from the opening possession. Nicole Pinckney added nine points, seven assists and three steals, and fellow junior guard Jahnna Hajdukovich had nine points on 3-of-5 three-point shooting as UAA finally played its first GNAC home game since Feb. 22, 2020 – a span of 693 days.

The Nanooks (1-9, 0-5) were led by 13 points and three assists from freshman guard Pearle Green, but the visitors were hurt by 27 turnovers as they lost their ninth in a row.

"We started well but then completely lost our focus before halftime," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team was outscored 18-10 in the second quarter and led just 34-30 at halftime. "Fortunately we responded well in the second half and our depth started to wear them down."

Green kept UAF close at 37-33 on a three-pointer early in the third quarter, but the Seawolves answered with a 10-2 spurt, capped by a steal and layup by freshman guard Malie Marfil. Senior guard Stephanie Jackson made it 54-41 when she converted a three-point play with eight-tenths of a second left in the third, and the advantage would grow as high as 28 points in the final two minutes.

Picking up her 100th victory in a Seawolf uniform, Voliva tied her career rebounding high for the fifth time and her career assists high for the third time. Jackson and Marfil finished with seven points apiece as 11 of the 12 Seawolves made at least one field goal.

The victory was UAA's 27th in a row against UAF and extended program-record streaks to 41 straight GNAC regular-season home wins and 33 straight wins at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center for the second of four straight home games when they host Montana State Billings (9-8, 3-2 GNAC) on Monday at 5:15 p.m. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets and links to live stats and video.
