Falcons knock off Seawolves in Seattle

SEATTLE – Junior guard Tobin Karlberg scored a team-high 13 points but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not slow down hot-shooting host Seattle Pacific on Saturday in a 91-59 loss at Royal Brougham Pavilion.

Ranked No. 7 in the latest D2SIDA West Region poll, the Seawolves (8-4, 3-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points apiece from seniors Hunter Sweet and David Rowlands, while Karlberg grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Falcons (12-8, 5-4) were led by 31 points on 11-of-15 shooting from guard Divant'e Moffitt as the defending GNAC regular-season champs and preseason favorites shot 55 percent from the field, making 16 of 28 from long range.

"SPU played a tremendous game and was able to capitalize on all of our mistakes," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "They executed better than us and played with more urgency. We are not a finished product and you could see we are behind in completely gelling as a team. We've had too many practices with guys missing, as have many other teams. We've been resilient through the tough last two months, but we were not tonight. There's another tough opponent coming up Monday, so we'll have to regroup quickly."

Coming off a 68-61 road win Thursday at Montana State Billings, the Seawolves started strong with the game's first two baskets, and grabbed a 9-3 lead on Karlberg's layup at the 16:23 mark. The Falcons answered with a 13-2 run, however, and earned a 29-17 edge on Harry Cavell's layup with 6:42 on the clock.

The hosts led 47-26 at halftime and boosted their lead through the final 20 minutes.

Karlberg shot 3 of 8 on three-pointers as the Anchorage native made at least one trey for the 27th consecutive game, tying Mark Drake (Jan. 10, 2002 to Jan. 18, 2003) for the sixth-longest streak in program history.

Rowlands shot 3 of 7 from long range and dished three assists, and senior center Oggie Pantovic returned to the lineup after a one-game absence with six points and three rebounds.

Coming off a four-week COVID pause, the Seawolves will travel up Interstate 5 on Monday for their third road game in five days, facing Western Washington at 6 p.m. AST. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
